Thread: Can you still be a great armorsmith doing it like this?

I am a Master Doctor that is giving up Master Musician for Master Armorsmith.

I will not have many points to play with here, so getting any Tailor or Merchant is completely out of the question for me.

I can probably get Business 3 and Survey 1 with my left over points, but that is about it.

If I have a Master Tailor make me the schematics that I will need from the tailor profession, will I be able to craft all the "Cross Profession" materials from the tailor profession all by myself?

Is it better to make them yourself (If the above question is true) or buy these materials pre made from a Master Tailor?

What do most of you do about this delima?

just posted with some other guy in similar situation.

do your vendors first. you can place 6 with the vendor tree, drop it all and still have the vendors. If you are not going to have extra points do your vendors first. This can take a while if you dont have steady customers but if you do you lvl merchant at an ok rate. If you want a tent do that tree first, otherwise do the vendor tree....place 6 vendors (medic vendor, one for composite, one for other armor, one misc vendor, two at another location, or a resource vendor, whatever you think will be best). If you are going to be master armorwmith you will prob need a few vendors, more locations are good.

after vendors are placed, do the advertising tree and put them on the world map. I can not stress how important this is, and how much traffic you generate before your name is known. After on world map, drop that whole tree, if you want to dress them now do the hiring tree.

NOW DROP ALL MERCHANT, you need the points. you can also drop musician quicker and do merchant while doing armorsmith

you keep the vendors, they stay on map, and life is good. lots dont realize they dont need to keep business 3 or novice merchant to keep vendor.

tailor stuff:

find a tailor become freinds, either buy the crates from him or get schematics and run them in your factories. If you dont have any factories get one you will need it, get two you wil need that one too. I do both, I like to get the schematic so that I can just run in my factory and then get crates as I need them (dont have to worry about where to put 40 crates of sythetic cloth 40 crates of panels, sotre in factory instead of house), but I knowa couple good tailors that always keep crates stocked and will pick some up when I am not around my factory.

hope that helps

First of all, Thank you very much for this information.

The only problem I have is this... Is the vendor thing a bug or exploit on the merchant profession?

Do you think that the devs will eventually "Fix" this so that once you drop merchant, you will no longer be able to use vendors anymore?

Thank you for your time.

When the merchant revamp comes around (2-3 publishes time from the roundtable discussions a little while back if memory serves) then theres a very good chance that the number of vendors you can operate and amount of items you can store on your vendors will be limited to your merchant skills.

If 'grandfathered' vendors will be affected, is anyones guess.

Almost every single 'true' merchant (i.e. those that keep the skills and dont place and drop) is lobbying for that change to go through as fast as possible (there was originally a rumour it was coming with publish 6, now thats passed (were into publish 7 now) the only real indication is that there is a round of merchant fixes coming in the 'merchant revamp' scheduled.

If you're strapped for skill points, then buy schematics from tailors and/or master artisan for the components you require when making your armour, but if possible i'd reccomend not buying the items directly - if you make them yourself you can leave items in the output hoppers of factories for no additional storage space... if you've got to buy the finished crates, then you need to find somewhere to store them.

As for selling your wares, sell them at a discount to a 'true' merchant (someone who buys and resells at a profit) and to do that you dont need any skillpoints invested into merchant.

Sure, you wont make as much profit as someone who does everything themselves, but the options there if you want to invest the skill points.

About the merchant question, right now it is not a bug, that is just the way things are. Merchants are not very high up on the "need to fix list" latest rumor has our fix coming in patch 11, what they are actually going to fix I don't know but hope it is this paticular problem. As a professional merchant I veiw the dropping of the vendor line as an exploit. Having said that, I know there are lots and lots and lots of people who have done just that, run up the vendor line, recieved the vendors and dropped merchant without losing their stuff and without losing their vendors, you just need to make sure your maint. on your vendors is up todate. If you add planitary advertising, you will pay 21 credits per hour per vendor. Without planitary advertising 15 credits per hour per vendor. This is commonly done without problems by many people in the game.

If you are just a part time merchant - do you really need 6 vendors? I have just the one and am doing fine. I am playing to have fun, not dominate the game, I sell a little, go out with hunting groups a little, have fun alot....

I measure the cost to build as in my time to make, not cost of resources, so buying tailor items for example is the most cost effective way of doing business....

Ok, thank you all for this information.

Personaly, I will not "Steal" vendors from the merchant line like that. I am just going to use my extra skill points to get Business 3 for 1 vendor... Or just use the suggestion above about renting space from an exsisting vendor that I know.

Thanks again for your truly honest and informative opinions and facts.

Thank you for your time.

I know this is off topic, but I'll go ahead and say this:

I am a Master Armorsmith, Droid Engineer and Artisan. I have a couple of merchant skills and yes, I have dropped one or two so I could master Artisan. I may not be a full time Merchant, but I am certainly a full time Crafter. Crafting is all I do. I need a place to display my wares and I need to be able to do so in a fashion where everything is not bunched together so people cannot find things within a half an hour of searching. Limiting the way I do business would stiffle my business and likely cause me to go out of business. The fact that I can place to so many vendors keeps me from having to do things like spam the starport. While that is totally out of control (and will get worse with the merchant droid modules coming), at least I am not one more annoying line of spam.
