I'm thinking of going AS as Im always poor & have gotten bored with my template. Assuming I start grinding it, how hard is it to be good, or at least respectable? Am I going to need to have multiple BER13 Harvestors &/or paying top dollar for insane materials?

just wondering

Yes you will become much poorer at first..Yes you will need to buy good Harvs, and still have to purchase resources from Rangers (hides that go for 50cpu etc..) its not easy to be good even so...

First off its not really hard, its just time consuming and you better have a good mouse for all them mouse-clicks your going to be doing.

First and foremost I would suggest you NOT getting BER 13 Heavy‘s, use BAR 8,9, or 10 Medium Mining Equipment. In fact look for Small Mines with BER 5 or 6 on them.

Armrosmith the Cheap way-

1.) Copper and Sil Ore

2.) Grind PSG Plates at a gain of 80-84xp per unit.

3.) Go to the hospital three or four times due to your wrist being aggravated by the whole experience.

4.) After the Doctors have given you a Cast and some medication for your wrist, use your other hand to grind Armorsmith.

5.) Contact a lawyer and see if you can sue CSR for your injuries, and pay your medical expenses.

6.) Go back to the hospital and get your other hand looked at and put in a cast, don’t worry your almost done now.

7.) Your now a Master Armorsmith with hardly if any combat skills and you have just realized after making about 30 sets of armor you cannot lower the HAM costs. That your armor is just like everyone else’s and you could have purchased 10 sets of armor for what it cost you to become a Master Armorsmith.

8.) You surrender Master Armorsmith and go back to having fun.

everythign but that last part .... instead you get a fleet of BER 13's, join a guild with a resource tycoon leader, befriend rangers and hunters galore, and bide your time till you can make a few hundred suits, get rich, throw away your fleet and buy all the resources you'll ever need for AS

Armorsmith is not that bad, it does take a while to get. I started with a msll chunk of change from my "main" character, a former BH who had a few skil tabs to sell. I had been a holo grinder and made my own fleet of 10 rate medium extractors, and lucky forme had harvested alot of steel and stuff along the way i never used.

When i started my character, i had enough metal to grind out master armorsmith in a few hours (minus the aprentice XP and survey). When I got master armorsmith, I made some vehicles for XP and to get some funds. I purchased a couple wearable factories, and ran the sub combines for marib armor, and then did the assemblies for XP until I was a master. The process of running the sub combines took about a week, just left them running and did recsource hunting after work, and ground out master armorsmith in a weekend.

As far as making the armor you want, start looking NOW for rare resources for kinetic, and any layer you might ever want ot use.I got master armorsmith and only then realized i could not make 1/2 the stuff i had seen. Again, i was a bit lucky because I could run a second character through missions for money to harvest things and I had alot of scrap resources from holo grinding, some of which turned out to be really good materials.

Make a list of priorities on resources, in the case that a really good aluminum shifts in at the same time as a seemingly ho-hum polysteel copper. I dumped all my lots on a resource i thought was great and missed out on something i needed for eadvanced composite segments that turned out to be the best the server has ever seen (even tho it did not look that good to my untrained eye). I also passed on the stun layer comonents in favor of a good intrusive ore, which seemed like a good idea because i need alot of ore, but after near 3 monhts of waitin for vertex gemstone to apear i wish i had made a different call.

Look through SWGcraft.com and search for resources that you plan on using, (like amorph gemstone for kinetic segments) punch in 50% OQ and 50% SR on thier search tool, and get an idea of what the best stats are for that resource on the server, keep and eye out for anything close that you see for sale, and use that as a point of refrence when deciding which current resource to harvest. Do not be afraid to drop everything and move harvesters if something good pops up, even if it means you might not have enough polymer or whatever to set up your first armor run for another week. Learn to value a good resource, and stockpile a bit if you can.

Thats my advice, i just blew 4 million today on a known solid petrochemical fuel that I could have harvested more of, but thought 100k would be enough for a long time.

When you start your business, price your stuiff resonably but dont sell yourself short. I found similar suits, and price a little under them. I see alot worse suits then mine for sale for alot more, and admitedly have seen a few better ones for about 25k less a suit, but until i have been around long enough to harvest all my own resources i need to keep my prices in the mid range due to the amount i need to invest in suplies.

Also, make sure you jump on the first polysteel copper you see, axidite iron, neutronium steel (if you plan to make ubes) and all the other materials used for any armor you want to produce. you might see better stuff in 2 weeks, in which case you can sell your stockpile for 2-3cr a unit and turna profit (or make vehicles out of it) but you also might not see the named resource again for a month,

this is too long of a post already, hope some of that helped.

AS sounds cool, but it sounds like a lot of work too. I'm thinking of just going smuggler instead.

Yep AS is pretty fun... There is some good advice in the above posts, but I think i'll put my spin on it too...

First of all... Armorsmithing (if you haven't already found out) is All about the Resources...

Well I shouldn't say that, more like 80% Resources and 20% how you choose to experiment...

Also Armorsmithing is Not cheap... The startup cost is phenomenal (I am STILL paying off my startup debts)

As with most things in life, this principle applies to armorsmithing as well ... The 2 out of 3 principle... Quick - Good - Cheap...

You can either Make Good Armor Quick... but it won't be cheap

You can make Good Armor Cheap, but it will take a long time to get the resources necessary

Or you can make Mediocre armor Immediately at a cheap cost...

If you can do all three at once, then you are laughing all the way to the bank...

I highly suggest getting yourself a fleet of BER 13 Heavy Harvesters... (mineral being the most important)

Sure... it may be cost effective NOW, to run some BER 10's however, when something good comes in shift, you Need to throw everything you have at it, and harvest as long as possible on it... Harvesting your own resources is the single most thing you can do to lower costs of armor production...

Secondly, You should get an intimate knowlege of the resources on your server, what is in shift, what is recently out of shift, what is Long Out of shift, what the Best on the Server is... This is vital to making good armor... The best place to start is at SWGCraft.com... I would have given up AS a Long time ago if it weren't for that site... After that, I suggest you go shopping. Make a Large withdrawl from the bank, and visit all of the major planets, and go visit every resource vendor you can find... This is how I got most of my resources, and I found some incredible deals along the way.

Once you have all of your resources, it is time to start crafting some armor...

NOTE: Gloves are your Best Friend!!!

Gloves are THE best way to learn how to Armorsmith ... period ...

Sure somebody could right down a bunch of formulas for you to follow and you could probably make some good armor. However, you should know exactly what you are doing, and you should be able to determine what will happen should you try something new, before you do it. You should be able to predict the encumberance for an entire set of armor (at least a very close approximation) by looking at the HAM on a pair of gloves that you craft... this will come with time, and will vary depending on the quality of your experimentations.

Essentially everything after that is all Marketing and Merchantism...

Deciding on the price of your armor is rarely an easy task. First of all you should know the general value of your armor, based on the quality and price of similar pieces sold by other AS's on your server... Once you get in the ball park like that, then you should ask yourself "How much can I let this go for"... you will likely run into people who ask the other question to themselves "How much can I get out of this" ... both will help you find your ideal selling price, and perhaps the best thing to do would be to take an average of the two prices you come up with and use that as the selling price. From my experience, I found I couldn't let it go for how much I felt I could get for it, and as such I overcharged a bit for my armor and I readily admitted it... The main factor to me was that, I didn't have enough resources to be replenishing my stock often enough, so i didn't mind selling a little slower than I could have otherwise.

Anywho, Those are a couple of guidelines that I have followed during my armorsmithing career thus far, and they have served me well, take what you want from them, ignore the rest if you please...

Time for breakfast, gotta go...

Well I decided to go for it!

I have about a million creds on me & I bought a few resources as well as a BER13 harvestor to get things rolling. I decided to harvest some copper as I'll be needing that. I can't wait until I get to a point where Im actually making money with this prof.

It takes months to gather decent resources. If you have the patience to wait that long, and to spend that entire time combing the planets for the resources you need, and then in the end paying a boatload of money for the one or two resources you just havn't been able to find, then sure have fun with AS.

so would you say that its worth it? If I decide to go AS I'll have to spend a boatload of money to get what I need, as well as time & effort it will take to get master. It seems like a good proffession to me.

Definately, if you have expressed an interest thus far, then I think you will likely enjoy being an armorsmith...

It's nice because you can create your own niche in the Smithing world on your server... For a little while now I have reduced my output to a little more than Making Pure Guild armor and custom orders, with a couple factory runs to pay the bills... So many different possibilities out there...

Give it a shot, if you have tried a previous crafting proffession and enjoyed it, I think you could really enjoy Armorsmithing...

As I mentioned, the only hard part is getting the top of the line resources... after that it is all a matter of playing around and seeing what you can do

If you do want to become an established MAS, I would suggest befriending other MASs on the server. This comes in handy when you need resources.

We pass wps and resources among each other. Works out real well.
