I cancelled my account with a combat character, and all of my guild quit to play WoW, so now I need to pick up some combat skills for hide/bone harvesting. I won't need to solo anything like krayts or NS, this is purely for creature harvesting and clearing lairs for mining.
I need to keep master artisan and master AS (obviously). I also need novice scout and (probably) 3-0-0-1 merchant.
This leaves around 72 points for combat. Any recommendations? I have the feeling rifle isn't that useful without being master. Is swords the same way?

Pistols is the best prof to have without being able to get to master

What I usually do is grab my pre-nerf Nym's Carbine. That works pretty well!

Actually, getting 0-4-0-4 Swordsman is pretty effective if you need skills to do some hunting.
Also, 4-0-0-4 Pikeman is pretty decent.
Both of those use 63 skill points so you'll have enough to get 2 more skill boxes in either one.

TKA 0244 for the win....
Very accruate, Speed capped, hard hitting, can hit any pool, can dizzy-kd so can even try PvP and have at least a chance of the win....

I was master armorsmith master swordsman and had enough point left to have plenty of merchant and some tailor
drop master artisan, and take master of choice

I personally have Novice Fencer with an Acklay Stun Baton for my defense/clearing spawns for harvester placing.

I have no combat skills on my AS toon. So what i usually do is when i see some rabid shauputs or hermit spiders or such other evil creatures around my factories or harvestor......is well......ummm scream and then run away crying like a little girl with a skinned knee.
hehe i too have often thought about picking up some basic combat just to make harvester runs easier, I would either do pistols or unarmed.
But right now with master merchant, master artisan, master as and a good chunk of tailor i dont have much room to do anything useful....so for the time being im going to stick with screaming and running away.

I was a master rifleman/MAS for a while. That work out real well for me. I could go NS hunting and then use my shards and layers.
Now that I think about it, that was when I could still use my at-st in PvE......
Still, i've soloed NS without it. Rifleman was and still my fav profession next to AS.

Personally, I love swords. So I am a Master swordsman/ MAS/3-0-0-4 Merchant (recently dropped Master Artisan to get this)/4-0-4-4 Artisan. I have friends who are master artisans and they let me make stuff via their characters so I can keep up my business.
But I think the other paritial skills that people have suggested would work just as well, especially if you wanted to have some scout. I have 2 characters... and my other guy is a Master Scout/Master Commando... so that's how I do it.... I cheat and hunt with my other guy...
