How about placing an NPC were master Armorsmiths could buy clone armor schematics from (like the faction armor, only buying them with credits, instead of faction). Make this fella an old armor dealer or something, retired, blah, blah (you get the idea) so it fits in with the timeline.

Then I'd have to buy the expansion, and I have no plans to do that

What timeline? This game reminds me of Stephen King's Dark Tower series (which I've only read the first four), where all the people/locations from his other books are thrown together into one place.
