I first started playing when the game first came out and hardly anyone ever used armor. I had quit about a month or two into the game and just recently came back about a week ago. It seems to me that I can no longer get by with no armor like I used to. My question to you folks is what is a nice armor I can use while out hunting that wouldn't cost a lot and that I don't need buffs for? Is that even possible? hehe. I have very few creds to my name but wouldn't mind running a lot of missions if I have to in order to get decent armor.
I wouldn't be able to stand having to depend on a doctor for buffs in order to use armor so that stuff is most definately out. I am a smuggler though and can make a few spices if needed. (Not very high, just spices I) So, how does a poor fella like me get started into the armor wearing gig?

Probably want to look into Mabari (goofy looking stuff) which can have an ok kinetic resist and is very light and relatively cheap to make. Pretty easy to wear without buffs and you get the all important AR1 with a little extra kinetic resist thrown in...you only end up looking like a dork wearing it.
You can also save up a little more and go with chitin. Well-made chitin is also fairly light and can have good kinetic resist....best of all, not nearly as dorky looking as mabari 
The only problem you will probably face is that a lot of master armorsmiths do not bother making more than composite and ubese. That means you will have to spend a lot of time hunting around for a smith with a vendor who stocks these items or special order it.

While some of my fellow smiths might disagree with me on this, Mabari and Adv Mabari is a great lightweight suit that will provide some pretty decent protection against most of the starter stuff out there. The only problem is that I believe it's vulnerable to energy damage, but it does provide protection against kinetic. This will give you your light armor rating, fairly decent resists, low encumberance, and it's also dirt cheap. On my server, a full suit typically costs less than 5000 creds - easily picked up by a few missions.
While I'm not entirely sure what your price range is, If you wanted to go a little higher, then some regular,unlayered ubese or even chitin might be a good choice.
Composite is definitely the 'uber' armor, but you can get some good protection with the 'lower' armors. While I certainly wouldn't reccommend any of these for PvP, these are perfectly acceptable for PvE.

Try looking for a suit of ubese. Most of the smiths on my server who makeit get around 70-72% on the kinetic protection. If that's too pricey, there are probably newer armorsmiths around with 50-60% kinetic ubese who sell for much less.

Some armorsmiths make bone with a kinetic layer. Looks ugly, but works fine, and gives you both energy and kinetic protection. It's dirt cheap, too.
Remember, AR1 gives you 50% off all appropriate damages regardless of resists. This makes any armor a fabulous buy.
Personally, I am fond of chiton. I wear a white shirt, chiton chestplate, and a chiton helmet. Give me a stun baton, and I look like the riot squad.

Since you are poor, I'd highly recommend going with Mabori. I created a new Character to mess with on Chimaera and I bought a Mabori Chest and Pants for 100 credits each. Granted, they had 6% kinetic, but I just wanted the AR1. Its ONLY good vs. creatures though, since it has the energy vulnerability, don't fight NPC's that have blasters.

First, let me just say thank you kindly for the replies. I usually have about less then 10k credits on me at one time but I know that I can pull some nice missions for decent creds. I had no idea about AR1 providing 50% resists across the boards. I guess it makes me not necessarily have to look for kinetic resists.
I looked through the armor faq you folks provide on the forum and couldn't find an answer to a question I have. Do PvE mobs do localized damage, and if so, what is the most common spots? I'd like to be able to get by wearing just 3 or so pieces if possible as the cost to my ham bar seems like a lot. Like, could I get away with just a chest, legs, and a helmet? Once again, thank you for the replies.

As far as I can tell, PVE damage is random, so any part of you can get hit.

Get a good Bio -engineered shirt to go under armor, and if you dont wear armor leggings, get bio -engineered pants. Every little bit helps.

Ok, since we are starting off small, we have to think small. Thus I will have to ask: What do you need it for? If it is hunting, as in creature hunting, then you will want Mabari. Possibly Ubese if you got the credz, but not likely. BUT!!! If you want to do better on Faction Terminal Mission (i.e. where you go against guys with blasters), or if you're going to be attacking humanoid people, then I reccomend Bone. It's cheap, a lot of people can make some basic stuff, and it works. A typical bone armor will resist 20% energy, and thats if the person sucks at making it. I personally love my bone armor, as it offers great protection for a small budget. Of course it all matters upon what Server you're on and the like. If you're on Shadowfire, gimmie a tell and Ill hook you up. Well, if you want 20% Bone, hahaha. "Aspiring" Armosrsmith, here.
