Is there any other way to procure hides outside of hunting animals? My poor artisan is a lover, not a fighter, and I can't seem to attack the smallest animals without being thoroughly trounced. It seems that every other resource: chemical, mineral, floral, etc., we can achieve through our survey tools, all save for hides. Can anyone suggest a better way of getting enough for one's needs?

Well, you could probably buy some through the bazaar. If you are poor, like most artisans are, you will have to talk to a scout and ask them to get some for you. I was in the same boat as you, but after I got my surveying up, I worked on my engineering skills. Once you get Eng I, start making wooden staffs over and over again (before that, you can make whatever to get crafting experience). You can also start experimenting to improve damage. So I kept trying over and over to get the best carbine and best wooden staff. Since I am basically alone, I got both the scout skills and marksman skills. They cost 100 credits each, and when I need the skill points, I can just surrender them. Now, I will also build a powerup for the weapons to improve them even more. Then I will find a small target on the outskirts of the city, go prone, then start firing the carbine until the enemy comes up to you. Then I stand up and switch to the wooden staff. (You can drag the weapon to the top and use the f keys to switch equipment fast). With that, you should be able to handle the easy monsters just fine.

Hello crafters!

I have a quick question about hides. Specifically, wooly hides.

Currently i have three different types of Corellian Wooly hide, each with a different name under the resource line. Now, i know crafters tend to prefer to buy in bulk, so i was wondering if hides have to be exactly the same to use in a product

i.e. Corellian Wooly Hide :resource type Adin (not the exact name, but close)

or does it only matter if the hide is of the same type and planet?

Thanks for your time

There must, I realise, be something unutterably horrible in front of me, but my fear of the big birds compels me to carry on. More people run past me, all with the same frightened expression. They are running towards the birds, away from something unknown. I am running from the birds, towards something unknown. Not for the first time in my life, I curse my bad luck.

Imho, the bigger the stack the better. The items we craft are made up of different components. These components take anywhere from 5 to 120+ hides each... The problem is that you cannot combine diffent types of hide in the same component. So basically, I would never buy stacks less than avout 150+ because with bits of 1 and 2 I just end up deleting it anyway.

Some crafted items specifically ask for a hide type (woolly, etc.), while the lower level ones just specify that it should be a "hide". Wooly hide is very valuable to crafters following the tailoring or chef tree and I would agree that buying in bulk is more important, since we can't mix types in a schematic recipe. I would suggest that you not which animals give the best hides and stick to using those. That should improve the products that are produced too. Hope this helps

If the hides are stacked in the same pile then that means that the artisan wodl have ot use as many as were in tha tpile since htey cannot be stacked by hand.

This is why I usually sell hides by the 250 stacks, if not 1k. The more in the pile, the more useful it is for the crafter.

welshy,
to answer your question: if a crafter needs 5 hides, and has 3 wooly (adin) and 2 wooly (some other) he/she cannot mix those 5 hides together into 1 component slot. if there were 2 component slots, 1 requiring 3 and the other 2, things would be fine. hope this helps.

Where are people getting high quality hides from?

I would like to point the scouts in the right directions as most people bring back low ql or malliability stuff.

Your best bet is to do Like I do. I hire Novice (or soon to be master) Rangers to look for my hides/bones. Simply put, they tend to go for the hardcore planets to get their experience and most really good hides usually come from the exotic planets like Lok,Endor, or Yavin. The key to finding good hides is pretty much like surveying and sampling the planets.. except instead of surveying.. you have to kill..and usually a creature will not give up a set hide, but either 2-3 types of hides, so it pays to kill quite a few creatures that each give off hides/bones to get an idea of what they COULD drop. If you go this route tho, be prepared to pay steep prices if you happen to find a nice exotic hide. Most rangers will charge 10cr/unit for the good stuff.. and belive me, when it comes to quality and encumberance of your armors, it becomesvery crucial, especially if you want to dedicate your experimentation on your resistances. Just remember, these guys get paid to do a good job finding the hides that YOU want. If they come back with crap.. they know they won't get paid. If you think 10cr/unit is a little steep.. consider the fact that endor alone costs well over 8k for a round trip from Corellia. So, if you just buy 1k worth of hides, your ranger pretty much made a 2k profit.
