Currently, the encumberance numbers don't really have any meaning that players can identify with. "This full set of composite is encumbering." "Why? Um....I don't know.....it's got like.....numbers...and stuff."

What would make more sense is to give each piece of armor a mass. Let's say for instance, that a full set of stormtrooper armor wouldhave a mass of9kg, based on theoretical numbers provided at http://users.vnet.net/seawolf/sw/encumbrance.htm. If you start thinking galactically, on Earth, itsmass would be 9kg, in space, its mass would be 9kg. OnEarth, its weight would be about 88 Newtons.Tatooine, for example, is theorized to have 30% the mass of Earth (http://www.tataouinetours.com/articles/bright.asp). You could easily come up with a gravitational constant for Tatooine, and therefore calculate the effect that gravity would have on 9kg of mass. Then the "encumberance" would be based on the weight of that object on such planets.

Encumberance is not completely based on weight, I realize. There are also factors related to assembly, such as the ease of motion. Those factors could still be effected in the crafting process, and therefore experimentation points could be spent with a similar effect.

The interesting aspect this would add to the game is, perhaps there are certain planets on which heavy armor would be more feasilble, and other planets where it would be nearly impossible to wear heavy armor.

Maybe that is the idea behind the stat shifting PSGs? Can you imagine how people would freak out if this were the case?
