Ok my fellow smiths I have a question what layers do you use the most? I am assuming the advanced layer that adds to kin and eng also do you put 2, 3, or 4 in the segment? Curious I have not experimented with the layers yet. Everyone seems to be happy with the non layer I make

the only ones i use are the primary (resources allowing)

Energy , Kinetic (resources allowing)

not much call for specials, and normally layering makes the armour too expensve except for the top guys, try out a few.

I have the same question when it comes to how many layers. do i need to put in 4 layers for all 3 segments for a total of like 99 layers per suit?

You don't HAVE to, but that's what the elite are going to expect in their armors. They're going to want to see primus layered stuff 500 points above the unlayered caps and energy layered stuff at at least 1000 points above the unlayered cap.

Oh, and it's 132 layers per suit (4*3*11) so they do chew up the resources.

Umm, I don't know where you get 99 from, but yes, 4 layers in each segment, 3 segments per core, and 11 cores per suit (which comes out to 132 layers per suit).

I use Primus and only Primus. But that'smy personal choice, and I refer people wanting other layered armor to a buddy of mine that makes mostly Energy.
