Thread: Very disturbing problem, Amazing Success sent the special resists down by 3%.

I was practicing with some base 4% to all Krayt Scales, I make a segment with most all of the points into the top bar to lower encumbernace, and 1 into the bottom, and a couple into quality to boost the integrity, and something very odd happened...

After the assembly on some composite armor gloves they came out to 24% to all but electricity which was 34%, HAM was 29/26/30. I start experimenting and put 3 points into Experimental Quality (middle bar) and the result is an Amazing Success, but the effect it had was bad, all the Special Protection resists that were at 24% dropped to 21%! I again put 3 points into Experimental Quality and it raised to 28%. Needless to say these gloves were going to be junk...

I'm at a loss as to why this happened...
Has anyone else experienced this?

On a side note if any one has a process to getting the most out of krayt scale enhanced armor, I'd appreciate some pointers. Using krayt scales seems to make the end result vary wildly. My best so far using 4% krayt scales is 70% on everything but electricity which was higher. I've never been able to hit 70% again since. *shrug*

follow up:
Still practicing with these things...
Put 5 points into Experimental Quality (middle bar) and got a Great Success, and the resists fell to 21% from 24%!

This makes no sense

Another follow up: Still using 4% scales...
Results after assembly on some comp gloves were 24% to all but electricity which was 34%, I put 2 points into Experimental Quality this time and the result was a Critical Failure! But get this... the end result was everything that was at 24% bumped to 33% and electricity was bumped to 50%!

Talk about wacky...

If you use more than 1 point at a time a separate roll is made for each point and the average of these rolls is what is displayed as great success etc. So basicly it could have been one fail and 2 amazing or something like that.

At least this is how I have understood it based on developer feedback on the matter a year or so ago.

You are not alone. After seeing your post, I thought I'd try it myself to see what happened. I made an unlayered segment in the manner you described. You didn't say whether you were a twelve-point smith, and while I don't see why it would matter, I just used 10 points.

I, too, got gloves with 24 percent resist to everything but electricity. Like you, I then put three points in the middle row, getting a great success instead of an amazing. Resists dropped from 24 to 23. Three more points in quality and another great success raised the base to 32 and electric to 39. Four more points and a great success capped everything at 40 with electric at 47.

I had another random krayt scale so I decided to try again and experiment with more points at one time. I got the same segment and made gloves, putting 8 points into the middle row with a great success. Resists dropped from 24 to 17. Two more points into quality (maxing the middle line) only brought the resists up to 34. Out of curiousity, I dump my eleventh and twelfth point into the lower row and that brought the resist up to 40.

I have no insight into why this is like it is. Personally, I don't put krayt scales into comp. I like to use them in ubese, maybe padded.

Oh, you also mentioned putting points into the top row of the segment to lower encumbrance (correct) and a couple points into quality to boost integrity. That's not quite right. Quality (middle bar) raises the base; the top bar (durability) lowers encumbrance and boosts integrity on the segment.

Thanks for testing it out.

After many more tests with krayt scales, I've come to the conclusion that you must pump the middle bar on the unlayered segment to max out the base, even tho there is no base effectiveness stat in the final product. After maxing out the unlayered segments Experimental Quality, the final combine acts normally, and I'm able to again reach 70% on every special resist stat (except electricity) with only 4% Krayt Scales.

Its really weird tho, the negative results only show up when you don't put any points into the middle bar on the segment.

Btw I'm a 12pt smith.
