Startup costs can be as expensive as you are willing to make them. If you're in a hurry to start producing high end armor, and you're buying high end resources then you're potentially looking to spend millions.
If you bide your time, collecting your own resources, producing when you're well supplied, then of course costs will be lower.
Associated costs:
Mineral Harvesters
Gas Harvesters
Armor Factories
Fusion Power Gens
Armor Station
Crafting Tools
Synth Cloth
Reinforced Fiber Panel
Armor Experimentation CA's
Power & Maint.
Storage
You'll save credits if you can hit the Artisan and Tailor skills that assist Armorsmith. (Not sure if it's possible to hit all the needed boxes with one toon. I have it spread over 2 toons.)
Get as many harversters as you can place. It also helps if you have friends who will lend their lots for a really good spawn.
I spared no expense on harvesters. I have 3 accounts, and can drop 22 Ber13's on a mineral spawn at any time. Quality and quantity resources are key if you want mass production.
Storage is also another big issue, I'm finding. So far, I've filled 4 medium and 1 small house, and 2 factories with AS resources and associated items.
I did a little of both theories while building my business. I harvested for months prior to beginning learning AS, building the resources I knew I would need, both for the grind and production. Those I could not find, I bought. I also got some invaluable assistance from guildmates. I was very lucky in that aspect.
Nowto give you some hard numbers: I started the path to AS with 17 million credits. When I started production, I was down to5 million. I've spent 28 million on Experimentation CA's to get to 12 Points. (Which is low for my server. Some pay upwards of 40.)
It took me about 8 days to grind. I had all the resources I needed, but didn't really make an effort to do it quickly.
Don't let any of those numbers scare you off. Like I said, it can be as expensive as you make it. Ireally enjoy AS and can't see ever giving it up unless sales stop or the CURB kills the fun.
Edit: Forgot to hit on your "earning potential" question. That will vary, depending on the current environment of your server. I've found a niche' on my server with 80kinetic-electric / 71basemini-suits. I sell the 4 piece suit (helmet, chest, gloves, boots) for 150k in a backpack. Sales are brisk, and the money is good. My Stun is sub-server best. I'm hampered by resources and thehighest I can get is 34% while server best is 39%. I do sell some helmets, but not many. I'm just starting to experiment with other configurations and armor types, now that I'm more comfortable with the profession.
The key is to find an area that you're good at, and take advantage of it. Find your niche'.
