I think i know the answer, but is there any way to determine the schematic number for armor parts. I check one at a time from 00-171 over the past few days and did not find any armor schematics that i could grind with.
Any suggestions on what to grind...? Please help!

Trial and error. Basically you have to open your list of schematics in the datapad. DON'T sort them. Count down to the one you want from the top.
Now here's the tricky part. The number of the schem you want varies based on a couple of factors. First it depends on what schematics you have access to, so everyone is different. Only count the schematics that you can access with the tool you are using. For example, don't count the bofa treat schematic if you're using a clothing and armor crafting tool. Also, if you aren't going to be using a crafting station (if you're grinding ubese shirts, for example. They don't require a crafting station, do they?), don't count the schematics that require a crafting station. If you aren't near a station, schems that require one (layers, cores, segments) won't show up and won't count toward the schematic number.
Once you have an idea what the number might me, start up the tool. Then you can type /sel and the number. The crafting tool will pick a schematic. See what it is and then look in your datapad to see how far above or below you are, and then try again. Eventually you'll narrow it down.
Remember, the schematic number will change almost every time you train a box in armorsmith because each box gives you more schematics, thereby changing the number of the one you want.

As far as what to grind:
From novice armorsmith, they took out the one good choice (armor upgrade kits) with Publish 20. Now you want to get to ubese shirts, and there seems to be two ways of getting there from novice.
1) Make three segments (any kind) by hand and then make the corresponding core by hand. Repeat. You really can't use a macro do to it this way, but it is cheaper than what I'm about to suggest.
2) Do a factory run of segements (any kind) and then use them to craft a bunch of cores using a macro. You get no xp from the factory segments, but the grind is much faster.
Any other ideas out there?

Thanks for the input...i was going to do the factory run of segments and bite the bullet on cost. I will play with the schem number some more...thanks a ton.

I found that i can find the schem number by using /sel #...but when i put that number into a macro it comes out to be something else. ...

Hmmm, dunno. I used the macro in this post (http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=tailor&message.id=19994&page=1) when I was grinding tailor. Worked fine for me. I don't suppose you found the schematic number first without being near a crafting station and then fired up the macro next to a station? That would throw off the schematic number by increasing the number of schems available to the tool.
Note that if you use a long macro like the one in the link I posted, the game will chop the end of it off each time you log or shuttle (at least it used to). So you have to remake the macro occasionally.
