I read down 8 pages and checked the stickied guide to armorsmithing to see if my question has allready been answered. If it is and I didn't find it, my appologies, and I'd appreciate a link.
The scales I aquired are varying resists with certian ones up to 10% in some categories. They are in serial groups of between 2 and 11. I've been trying to work with a guild armorsmith to find out what to do, but she has connection difficulties (and is tired of crafting armor anyway) so I thought I'd run it by the board experts.
I have a few questions :
(1) I understand that these scales will make every protection except stuninto a special protection. I've heard in this case an effectiveness slice will do nothing. Is this right?
(2) My server's armorsmiths can get kinetic-layered composite up to 80%/70%. Will making all protections special protections allow them to get 80% to all? If so, are they likely to have experimentation points left over for encumberence and/or use materials more optimized for maleability?
(3) If I go with stun-layered composite, will focusing experimentation in special protection signifignatly increase the stun protection? If so, by about how much? Will the stun protection continue to increase after the other protections hit the 80% cap?
(4) My guild armorsmith said she'd heard that Krayt scales are best used on ubese. With good materials and good scales, could ubese hit 80% all? What could I expect from stun-layered Ubese?
(5) What other armors might you reccomend, and how would they benefit compared to composite and ubese?
I purchased these scales cheaply (or so I think) at about 6k ea. If they're useless, I'm going to stick them in Marabi to loan to new players when I take them big game hunting. Well, okay. medium game
. But still.
Oh, for what it's worth my combat class is master rifleman, and I'm dabbling in squad leader and ranger.
Any feedback at all would be appeciated, especialy answering questions I didn't know to ask
.

Actualy, I should have said a question from a non-armorsmith. Oops. But if you're reading this, I guess it doesn't matter much.

1, Yes this is correct
2, The krayt scales will ad to your armor exactly what they say on the scales. If your normal armor is 70% and your scales have 4% to all you will end up with 74%
3, The only way to increase stun protection is to experiment on special protection during layer production. After that no experimentation will have any effect on your stun values. The theoretical maximum due to gated resources is 14% stun per layer.
4, Kinetic can easily hit 80% with decent scales on my server 74% is the standard good quality ubese. Using stun layers in ubese is not a good idea as you would end up with low kinetic and not more than 14% stun potection because ubese has only one layer slot.
5, Apart from composite and ubese krayt scales can be useful in wookie armor and some like to use exceptional ones in RIS to remove the acid vulnerability.

Seltak, thank you for your response. I still need some more help, probably simply because I don't know enough to understand what you said
.
I did understand the part about stun layers. Thanks, that's a big help.
I know that the scales add exactly their resists to the finsished product, but I don't realy understand about special vs.base protection in this case. Does experimentation in special protection go farther per point than in base protection? Does this also apply to specials that are granted by scales?
I think the thing I realy don't understand is this: it seems bad to have effectiveness slices do nothing. Why, then, would anyone use krayt scales in composite? I'm hoping you would because that'd leave more experimentation for encumberence.
The same question applies to Ubese, too -- does adding the special resists cause them to increase when you're experimenting to max kinetic? Or does it work like stun layering, where the protection granted by it can't be upped in segment or armor experimentation?
I like the idea of using them in wookie armor. Too bad I'm not a wookie
. I also (think) I like the idea of using them in RIS -- if I ever stood a chance of getting any. I have a good number of scales with several 7's, 8's 9's and the occasional 10 in resists. Are these 'exceptional'?

look at the armour you normally buy, and add the %on the scales to each of the items on the armour, so for the 70%base composite, you can say add 4% to acid, 6%kinetic, 3%to energy etc the %values depend on the quality of the scales.

Unfotunately you wont get the added benefit of the higher per point increase of special protection when you use krayt scales.

Thanks guys, I think I understand now
. Oh well. That explains why people don't use them very often.
