This may sound like a total newb question here, but I'm not a smith...
how the hell did everything but 2 types of damage end up in special protection?

One Word: Krayt Dragon Scale.
It actually looks pretty cool when it comes out... with everything in the special protection with only restraint in the effectiveness.

For those that don't know, the krayt scales add a special protection value of 4%-10%+ for all but restraint and stun to the armor segment. (this can result in up to 80% special protection on all stats but restraint and stun, which is very nice =))

Doesn't this also mean that your stuck with a max of 80% on these stats, since they are in special protection and cannot be sliced? Why not work for a higher base instead?

what is restraint damage anyway? its not on sabers(currently), any melees or ranged weapons, so what is it? jedi power?

people use a scale because sometimes they have high acid resists (not the typical 4%)
RIS has acid and stun vuln, so you can plug the acid hole with a krayt scale, if the acid is like 20% on it, that is much better than a 13% acid layer. and lets you have that layer for more stun or a high end NS layer

Anyway that resists change is actually a good thing it means that it will be lightsaber resistant
