I heard that you can now be a pretty effective armorsmith with just the normal 10 points of experimentation. Is that true?

In a word, yes.
In a few more words: There is only one line into which you can put experimentation points in each step of crafting armor now. Well, segments have an extra line for condtion but it doesn't do anything. Even using pretty darn good resources (resource quality determines how many points you're allowed to use), I've never needed more than 10 points to cap an experimentation line. Amazing successes make little, if any, difference either.

But in the event of a "good" or "moderate" success, those 2 extra points can help out.

yes, but still you will not get the same stats.you will just start over again unless is ris. kind of like what artsians do with av-21s

I did some crafting with and without my +25/25 suit..... i got two "good" successes out of 9 pieces without the suit... i almost never get anything less that great with the suit. so extra skill is still worthwhile

Much closer than you would if you didnt have those 2 extra points. With faction armor especially. Condition.

Good points. I have noticed that I very rarely get anything less than a great success with +16 of my +20 suit on. I was getting goods and moderates without it.
But the question is Can I be effective without being a 12 point smith. Does anyone think the answer is no?

you can be effective. as effective as a 12pt. I would just make sure I have the assembly.

This will most likely be the death of my desire to continue AS.
The thing that REALLY irritates me, is the time I spent doing the FS master crafter. I didn't care about jedi, just wanted to be a better AS. The 10 additional lots would have been nice too though.
On the bright side....you can probably be an effective smith without getting Master. Well, I guess it could be considered a bright side.

assembly is less important than experimentation... somebody crunched some numbers a few months ago and showed that getting an amazing assembly boosted your chances for amazing success by 10% and removed alot of the possibility of lesser experiments... but you had to get an amazing for that.... whereas you can just cap the exp with tapes and rarely worry about botched experiments....
but if you dont care about remaking schems due to crap experiments then YES 10 points would be enough, you'll get like 2-3k less cond on the final piece but most ppl dont care... you can cap all effectiveness lines with 10 pts. /shrug

Well I have 4400 in force craftin so I would imagine that helps out my successes, but on many occasions I only use 9 points of expermintation.
