If you opt for two sets, your probably best served by a bone set and a chitin set for PvP and PvE respectively. This is probably the cheapest alternative.
If your looking for one set only and have the cash (120k is plenty for a good one) the more advanced sets have the best protection versus both energy and kinetic. Ubese has good protection against both for the head, chest, and legs, but little kinetic protection for the arms. Padded and especially composite is great for both type of attacks, but have huge encumbrances.

The further gone it is, the less is the chance of a successful repair.
However, every repair is a gamble...I'd try to repair them at no lower than 50%, preferably before.
If you cannot afford to replace the piece in the case of a crumble, you might be better off using it while making money until you can ![]()
The risk is not too high with good tools, but its always there.
