Certain professions got a bonus from wearing certain kinds of armor. Perhaps +1 AR for a particular set of armor. Could be implemented as a certification bonus on the expert professions. This might increase the value of the non-composite and non-ubese armor suits. I imagine it would also level out the market if the composite suit certification was reserved for commando and bounty hunter classes. Sure I could take composite and have 90% AR1 protection, but is that really better than 90% AR2 protection against fewer, more common types of damage?

Another modification might be in layers allowed based on type. Bone could support one layer, mabari could supporttwo layers, and so on all the way up to composite with support for seven layers. To balance out this bonus, the special protections could be dropped. This would allow a lot more customization in the armor's effectivenessand still leave composite with a higher base value. Perhaps it may shift the weapons used away from heat and acid, which seem to be standard issue for all PvP. Mabari would be a much hotter item if it could be customized to be just the damage type the PvE combatant was expecting to see most often.

Someone else posted a suggestion for boosted experimentation for lower level armors and I don't think that balancing would strictly be necessary if the above ideas were implemented. I think this would remove a lot of 'the grind' and make being a novice armorsmith a much more enjoyable prospect. What do you all think?

I think its a cool idea with restricting composite to commando and bounty hunter!

But i dont htink its cool to remove the special protection, so u have to setin layers to get it... Maybe its rigth it would get mabari more popular, but Novice armorsmiths (who cannot make layers) Would have a great problem with selling it (greater then already)... It would make novice armorsmith a grinding hell...

Maybe if u maked it so novice armorsmiths could make 1 kind of layer it would work?

Just a though...

Right now a typical grind consists of Mabari chests until personal armor 3: ubese is available. Then grinding technique4, layers4, deflectors4, personal armor4, then master. These modifications put more stress on the layers and technique trees early, since more utility is available at these lower levels. You're right that the basic novice armorsmith is screwed until he either gets layers1 or technique1, but notmore so than he is right now.

you assume that people stop to make armor during their grind. in today's game, they dont. for those who aren't hologrinding, they might make some to see how it looks, but most people do not make the lower armors until they are master so that they might make it of higher quality. The main problem I have with your suggestion is the increase in the # of layers. I dont know if you're a long time master smith, but 7 layers could get you to 80% base and 80% special very quickly without a whole lot of extra ham. I do like your suggestion of class bonuses for armor types, however I feel that it should not be so great as an armor piercing level, but possibly a +10% bonus to all protected areas, with a cap of 90% as it is now. This would allow for more people wearing padded, and chitin, and would just leave mabari (which is a decent starter armor, but no use in PvP) and bone to rot. Something to think about and discuss if others feel that this would truely help novice smiths or even masters diversify their wares and markets.
