I'm not yet an armorsmith or anything, but I'm thinking of trying it out and I keep picking up these Voritor Scales and Hide Segments while running missions out on Dantooine. It is to my understanding that they are both used in Bone Armor, but how good are they in making a decent set of armor? Some of the segments had like 10 HAM across the board with 7% energy / 6% kinetic / 6% base for the Hide Segments, and something around 4 HAM with 5% energy / 4% kinetic. I'm just wondering about what stats would I end up with in a suit of Bone Armor if I used these segments, and also if it's worth it to even mess with using the voritor segments?
I hope my question isn't too confusing, but I'm new to the whole armorsmith scene and I'm just trying to figure a few things out that's all. Thanks a bunch.

The segments are crap. They only work in bone armor, and generally all they do is add a small amount of kinetic resistance. Boo.
The segment enhancers are good though, as they are not limited to bone. Using them on Ubese, for example, makes for some uber kinetic resistance.

1) Scales are awesome. They take the energy vuln outta maberi. They boost the kinetic rating of ubese into the upper 70's to 80%. You can never have enough scales
2) Segments work in bone armor, which normally has kinetic vulnerability. By using the scales, you avoid a great deal of the organic resource gathering. Sure the stats wont be *uber*, but the kinetic vuln being removed will make it a nice selling one. Your profit margin goes up with using them, especially if you loot your own ( I never buy them). Just remember that bone armor uses artisan experimentation. If you didn't pick up the domestic line in artisan, don't make bone armor ( unless you're just making crap to throw on the bazaar for cash). Bone armor is nice, cheap, and if you take the kinetic vuln out, good for low level NPC missions.

1) Agreed. Scales are nice, but much more rare then the segments. To avoid having to delete a lot of segments just to get the scales, click on "loot" rather than "loot all" or double-clicking. This allows you to see what the critter is holding and pick up only what you want, leaving the rest behind.
2) Yes, but the segment only gives you only 4-7% defense against kinetic. This is hardly worth it, especially with armor piercing costs, and the HAM increase by using this segment. For a first set of armor, I still prefer Mabari even over bone with Voritor segments.WithMabari, even a 7 pt. armorsmith can make it with 15% - 20%+ kinetic defense and lower HAM. I sell full sets for 14K on my server, so that is generally affordable by most new players.

That 4 to 7% goes from being completely vulnerable, to blocking more than 50% of all kinetic damage. Maberi is good for critter hunting. Bone is good starting armor for low level faction missions ( and dirt cheap). Bone usually costs 3k or less for a suit. Also, I don't know of any critter that does AP kinetic damage. If it does, maberi would be just as bad. Faction missions ( or other NPC)domostly energy and some kinetic damage. Maberi is worthless for faction missions, unless you enhance it.

As an afterthought I also wanted to say that you nicely point out that people should pick the armor that does the job, there is no panacea. Even 90% base composite is not the only armor a person would ever need.

*NOD* I keep trying to point out to people exactly that. Why waste a 400k suit of stun composite on fighting dune beetles?? Talk about wasteing condition points/credits. People buff too much. I haven't buffed my hunter char in over a month. She's tanking beetles right now ( pistoleer). IfI were tka, I'm not sure I'd bother with armor at all ( toughness, COB). Low to mid level mobs can easily be covered by maberi armor-no buffs. Save cash while collecting that 60 cpu insect meat!! If you're buffing anyway, why waste a good set of ubese on dantooine?? If you're a rifleman, why kill your stats with anything more than maberi/ tantel/ chitin/ bone?? The prey shouldn't make it to you anyway. If you're a medic/doctor in a group, why kill your mind ham and regen with heavy comp? That rancor shouldn't be beating on you anyway....
