Forgive the noobish question, but I've started as an Armoursmith, and I've noticed that I have the option to 'create prototype item' or 'create manufacturing schematic'.
Can anyone offer a brief explanation on why I would choose to make a schematic? I've tried searching the forums, but can't seem to find a conclusive answer.
Thank you.

You'll need the schematic due to the requirement that most high-end armour has for multiple identical items. For example: a Ubese Jacket needs 4 identical ubese armour segments, and the only way to get these is to run them through a factory schematic. As an armoursmith, you'll be using primarily Wearbles factories with the occasional Equipment factory (used to produce PSG sub-components made by a master artisan).

Thank you for the swift reply.
So, if I'm understanding correctly. (Let's use my current level as an example)
I'm making bone armour, and after an experiment, I have an amazing success on a chestplate. I can THEN choose to make a schematic, and if I then use THAT schematic in the future, it will retain the improved characteristics of the experiment?
Perhaps I'm a little slow on the uptake since I've yet to reach the point of using a factory.
Thanks for the help.

Schematics are used in factories to make multiple identical items.
For instance, a compositehelmet requires3 identical composite segments. Those segments have to be made in a factory via a schematic to be useable in a helm.
So say you want to produce a factory run of composite helmets. First you need to factory produce the layers you'll need, then factory produce the segments (using the layers up in the process), then factory produce RFP's and Synth cloth, then factory produce the helmets (using up the segments, the synth, and the rfps). Each stage requires wasting one component to make a schematic with which to run in your factory.
Some armorsmiths factory produce the segments, and then handcraft the individual composite peices. But to put out large quantities of high quality armor you'll want to keep making comp peices untill you get the amazing crafting results you want, at which point you'd make a schematic and then factory produce identical amazing result peices.

Thank you, I understand now.
And if I'm not mistaken, I do not gain ANY XP for using a factory, I must do it all by hand?

Correct, you only get xp for the stuff you craft by hand

Also remember though. With a schematic you have to have the exact resources/loot with which you made the schematic to do another factory run. For instance lets say u made a schematic 3 monthes ago. Chances are your not gonna have all the resources to do the factory run.

Actually you do get experience for factory runs, but it is negligible, a very tiny fraction of the experience you get for hand crafting which is lower, even, that what you get for practicing the same item (which does not produce an end product). I haven't bothered to attempt to figure out the fraction of XP gained by a factory run.
To verify. Have someone set up a factory for you who is not an armorsmith and never has been. Do a factory run. That person will then have armorsmith experience acrued. I pick up some tailoring experience like that when I rarely run cloth schematics in one of my factories.
