First I would like to say, before posting this topic i read the guide to Armour Crafting, to make sure it wasn't a redundant question. The guide is informative and very well done.
I have been hunting alot of krayt, nightsisters, and Rancors lately. And have amassed quite a collection or armour segments/armour shards, and keep bringing in more daily. Filled 2 houses full of armour related drops, and need to clean house a little, as more is always coming in.
In game i have obtained very little information about what defines good segments.... Most replies are like this 99% of segments are junk, only the REAL good ones are worth using. Not able to really tell what is REAL good. Or others tell me there bugged and not worth hanging onto.
This is inforced by when hunting, most fellow hunters destroy there shards, becuase of the believe there worth little value. I looted armour shards from elders on 2 occasions, and noone in group wanted them, told me destroy them
Are armour segments bugged and useless?
If they are not, what are stats on shards/segments worth using and keeping (rougly)
Krayt Hide/Segements
Rancor Hide/Segments
Night sister shards.
I think if hunters had a way to differentiate, what where useful shards, there would be alot more available.
Anyone information will be appreciated before i start forming a little village to store my armour drops.
any input would be appreciated.

hi ho,
well it isnt that easy to say but what you can keep in mind:
NS Layer with 3% are standard (usefull but not worth much)
NS Shards with -10 to every stat are standard
Rancor Hide with 3% standard
Kryat Hides with 4% standard
Kryat Segments with less then 20% are not usefull to me
Janta Hides 3% ... janta hide is realy usefull anyhow
standard prices depends on how many in a row you got...
which leads to price pending between:
nothing - 10k per unit (to me, except janta hides which go for more if row is more then 4 units long)
all above varys very much... as every item got no real fix price.
regards,

Because your question needs a very long answer, Ill answer one aspect...
NS Layers:
Anything 5 Base and above is good, obviously the higher the better, heres why...
I sometimes use 2 NS layers and 1 electric layer and 1 Janta hide depending on the quality of the Base on the NS layers. The electric layer just boosts the elec to the max of 80% and push the base a bit. The NS layers will always reduce the HAM and increase the base, but you gotta do the math to best figure how many to use.
So for example...if u have a 10%base NS layer, that pretty much replaces 2 normal layers and then some (lol 10% base ns layers are extremely rare but for examples sake). So because your only using 1 layer, the HAM is going to be really low with the base remaining high. Additionally the -6 or so on the NS layer will reduce the HAM even further! You end up with an ultra-light, very high base comp piece.
Remember though...If u have a NS layer say 5% base and -7 health, make sure u use that for the chest piece. A 5% base -7 action for thelegs and so on...
And remember try and keep everything out of special resists. I love when people show me there uber 70% cold resist Krayt armor with 60% base!(I forget if thats the default krayt resist but you get the point) Absolutely useless! Sry but I cant remember the last time someone shot me with an ice maker hehe.

Actually my friend, I would say that first and foremost identical serial numbers per batch is the primary consideration when discussing pricing. If I cannot make a decent sized limited factory run with the segments, I will not buy them at any price they are offered.
Secondly, Scales, in my opinion are of greater value than any of their segment counterparts. For instance...I can place a Voritor Scale SEGMENT only as a replacement for a Chitin armor segment, but, I can place a Voritor Lizard Scale (not segment) in any type of armor segment that I wish to. The same holds true for Rancor Padded Segments (padded armor segment replacement only), and Rancor Hides which I can add into the armor segment of any armor I am crafting in order to gain those benefits.
Now then, I craft all armors, not just Composite (which in my opinion has really dumbed down our profession) so I would rank segment values (in series of at least 5) as follows....
1.) Rancor Hide. This gives me 3% to baseAND heat and cold boost. Very nice for layering the new Wookie sets, and I have purchased 39% Heat, 26% Cold hides very cheaply on my server.
2.) Sharnaff Plating (not Plating segments) and Voritor scales both add a rare combination of Kinetic and Energy resist boosts.
3.) Janta Hide, as mentioned above, is always a good base improvement strategy for any armor type.
4.) Night Sister Shards (not layers) can make very heavy armors quite light. In fact, I craft near 0/0/0 Mabari using these layers, and even the -10X3 shards are decent to make. I craft my UltraLight and FeatherLight series armors from these.
5.) Rancor Padded Segments. If the resists and base are high enough on these, I can really make some outragious Padded Armor with them. A 20%base / 30ish Heat/Cold set of segments of these are very valuable to my crafting style!
6.) Krayt Dragon drops generally only benefit Composite crafting. Although the Scales can be used to suppliment all armor types, their broad stroke resist additions tend to take away as much as they give in any armor type other than Composite.
7.) I have no use for post nerf NS layers. Many would disagree I know, but I would rather do other things with the slot they require than use it up for a small base % adjust and a -6 to Action.
Now this rating system is only my own, but the value pernumber of segments with identical serials is standard across the industry. You could give me two 30%base +30resist to ALL resist types, and there is VERY little I can do with them other than make a set of gloves or a Wicked Chitin Armor boots.

Hi thankyou ver much for the information given so far. I know that i am asking for alot I thought i would assist information by posting some stats:
Are base segments from any animal worth using?
I thought i would assist information by posting some stats:
Regular Krayt dragon scales (example)Yellow named Exceptional
cold: 4% 10 10
blast: 4% 11 13
energy: 4% 6 6
Acid : 4% 5 5
Kenetic: 4% 15 23
Heat: 4% 5 26
Highsister shards regular yellow named(example) night sister shards
base: 3% base: 8% health encumberance: -14
Action: -5 action: -9 Action: -11
Mind : -20
Regular Rancor Padded Armour segment Example of yellow named rancor padded armour segment
base effective: 12% 17%
Integrity: 2500 4450
Health: 20 13
Action: 15 11
Mind: 20 9
Heath eff: 15% 24
Cold eff: 15% 22
Regular rancor hide example of yellow name
base 3% 3%
integrity: 1000 1160
health: 10
action: 8
Mind: 10
Heat: 5 10%
cold: 5 7%
Are the regular version of these armour shards worth using?, if not is there a cut of point on yellownamed ones, which are worth keeping.
To the above poster you said he makes some nice padded armour. What kind of resists are you able to get using segments. I switched to ubese armour from composite for alot of my hunting, and actually finding it quite effective, 75% kenetic with extremely low hams is good the mind. Would be willing to try padded aswell.
The above post was very informative thankyou.

I general, the least likely to be worth anything are the segments. Unless they are 20+ or more, a good smith can usually do better. A second consideration is the type of segment. Many smiths do not like/make many of the armro types. Padded armor is harder to make than comp, so padded segments may be worth less as the demand is lower. Lastly, a loot segment does not have any layer slots, so it can't be improved.
Segment enhancers are variously useful, but it depends on what it wanted. Krayt scales increase many resists, but have the downside of that is it moves all the resists it raises into the special resist catagory and as such can't be sliced. Janta hides are probably the easiest, they up the base, plain and simple. They are probably one of the most "valuable" ones as their benifit is simple and powerful. Nightsister shards, if they are good ones (-25 or better in one or more stats) can be the most valuable. They can significantly lower the HAM costs on composite, and make it much easier to wear.
Nightsister layers are almost always useful. The basic ones are base 3%, and lower the action encumbrence. They can go up above 20% base, and ones of that caliber can go for large amounts. These layers can vastly any armor.
Hope this helps.

As a rule of thumb I tell my customers that
1. All segment enhancers are good. ( janta, krayt scales, rancor hide, NS Shards )
2. Any looted segments that are 18% + base are good. ( rancor padded, krayt segments )
3. All NS layers are good. 5%+ Layers are very good.
My favorite to get are Krayt Scales. They make awesome Ubese, Ceremonial Armor.
