Hi, this is an idea that I posted in the "IN Development" Forum and since the responses I received were good, I thought I would throw it out for the profs that it would directly affect the most.

I'd appreciate any and all opinions, positive or negative

Thanks

Here's an idea,

OK, I understand and agree that making apartments in the cities would indeed increase lag, but how bout vendors?

Right now all vendors are in tents or houses, this is good because it allows a player a place to sell their goods in a stationary spot and not rely on the bazaar. However, we also have the problem that no one EVER goes to the minor cities. On Lowca everywhere but Theed and Coronet are basically empty. This idea will make the merchants unhappy I think, but it's really not gonna hurt them all that much.

Get rid of vendor tents. I can understand vendors in GuildHalls and houses, but other than that, get rid of the tents. In place of them, create a limited number of available vendor "shops" in the major cities. This will do 2 things; First: it will force players to visit other cities, and thus decrease lag in the few major ones Second: it will create a sort of "Business District". People will need to go to Bela Vistal and Kaadara and all sorts of places. Charge Rent for the different shops instead of the current maintenance cost, and charge more for the shops in Major Cities such as Coronet and Theed and Bestine, but less (A lot less) for the shops in the alleys of Mos Eisley and Restuss. Then charge a lot for the "shops" at Amidala's Retreat because it's such a pretty place to go, and charge next to nothing for the few cities that don't have shuttleports such as Mos Taike and *that one city on Naboo*.

Yes, This would bother Merchants, but as far as the player base, I think this idea wouldn't bother anyone at all, considering that For the best PvP Stun armor I go to Tatooine and for Weapons visit Corellia and for good PvE another city on Tat and for good ranged weapons go to one place and good damage sliced melee another and the best food is maybe on Dant.

I believe SOE needs to force people into the minor cities in a way that doesn't take away the functionality of Player Cities and also doesn't cause added travel restrictions. I know this is possible especially if they use instanced shops the same way they make apartments and houses in EQ2. (Although I really like the fact that everything has it's own "mass" in SWG)

Good idea, but what about the new artisan that wants to start his business and there are no shops able to be rented?

And why would the player base be 'forced' to go to the other cities that have low trafic now? All the best shops in the server would be located in coronet, theed, and mining outpost, which doesn't seem to solve the lag problem.

Player cities was the biggst mistake made in this game.. before cities went live every npc would be busy.. maybe not 100's of people but even places like deja peak or lake retreat.. or doba guerla (or how ever its spelled) had people around

This game has such a shifting population there are very few cities that last.. anywhere. A place that has a great selection today in 3 months can be totally dead.. CIties poof and become ghost towns. People thing ohh lets start a new one.. our great city and 4 months down the road its vacant like all the others.

If they had used NPC cities as the base there would have been population centers.. what 30-40?? if you count all the planets by centralizing the main populations to just a few cities would have imporved the sales markets drasicaly. A small area, like a merchants row would have grouped vendors in an area and made shoping soo much easier.

There isnt a player city out there that can compare to the beuty of De'ja, or the creapy vibe you get in rusette? sp? you know on rori.. Or the great bestin vs anchore head wars of the good old days.. There is a reason why EQ2 doesnt have um.. even SOE knows how big of a mistake it was.. but i dont think they will ever do anything about it.

Anyone that goes to dantooine and travels around for 2 hours shoping just to find something in the 30-40+ player cities or merchant tents around the mining postand then leaves with out finding what they want.. and not seeing a single sole knows what im talking about the player populations are just way to small to suport this type of system.. what i wouldnt give for a nice apartment in a penthouse in doaba.. but i dont think that will ever happen..

SWG 2?? anyone?

In my proposed system, Folks would still be able to place vendors in their houses and Guild Halls. This will allow anyone starting out to be able to setup shop. With the new galaxy Vendor search, people would still be able to find good products, even if they aren't in the big cities. But, as one makes more money, and fame for their wares, they will be able to bid on one of the shops somewhere.

Also, keep in mind, there are TONS of npc cities, its just that no one ever goes there. This idea takes into consideration that Major Weapon, Armor, Resource dealers will want the big shops near the Cnet Starport and the Theed Starport, but wouldn't it be cool for a BH to have (thinking RP here *RP in a MMO GASP*) an office to take contracts, or a Smuggler to have a place to (likewise) take contracts. In Coronet there could be 200 shops or more, Theed too. I don't think we'd run WAY out of shops.

I just think that there needs to be a bit of change.
