Thread: Stun layering for the 10-point smith?

I recently inherited a 10-pointer account, and have been looking for the best, most economical use of the small amount of great vertex and crism left over.

With a little guidance, I was able to hit 80Kin/80Energy/80Electric/70Base with no problem, thanks to the overall pretty killer resources I've collected over the last several months.

My goal has been to offer 70Base/80Electric comp with as much Stun as possible thrown in, using as little of the precious crism per suit as possible. Unless I'm missing something, I wasn't able to hit 70Base using just one Stun layer - I believe I hit 4Base/7Stun on the layer schem, and have to use 2 of them, along with an Electric layer maxed on Base (4/5, I think it was), in order to squeak out 15Stun/80Elec/70Base.

Am I using the best layering approach? Is one stun layer do-able with 70Base? The 27Stun segs the original AS made don't seem to be doing the trick. Also, is 70Base the best way to go? Do your customers tend to prefer slicing base to 90, or cramming in all the stun they can get, at the expense of Base?

I did some nice 10 stun, 71 base 80 kinetic, not put it on a vendor yet but will see how it goes

As a general rule with stun, I've found that my customers really only inhabit the polar extremes of stun resits.

The majority of the PvE crowd wants a bit of stun about just to plug the vulnerability in case that NS/insert-big-mob-here pulls a stun baton - in which case your approach is quite valid and produces good quality armour.

The majority of my PvP customers inhabit the other extreme, wanting as much stun protection as they can get in the chest and helm to protect against Fencers and Rifles (NB: other body parts aren't really likely to get hit by stun weapons since the targeted attacks from those who can use it hit only health and mind) - in this instance what you're looking at is putting everything into stun and base (in that order) and probably using Janta Hide to boost the base resists.

Stick to maxing base then HAM. There is a lot of 12 point smiths on Intrepid throwing out 39 stun/67 base but havent seen many doing the 70 base/10ish stun.

Assuming resources had gotten better- I was able to hit 70 base with only 1 4% layer and 2 3% layers.

Well here's the question:can you experiment higher on your stun layers than on your electric layers (i.e.,what % do you cap at when experimenting effectiveness on stun vs. electric)? Two electric layer resources are capped on SR* (copper and siliclastic ore) vs. only one for stun (crism sil ore), so it might be that you have better resources forstun and can hit a higher base with it.

You might try using some other layer that you have better resources for, if you don't mind putting another resist in special. Cold would be a good layer to use, since it's such a rare damage type and therefore doesn't matter much if it gets sliced up. Except that resources for cold layers usually aren't any better than resources for electric. Best layers in terms of hitting highest base are usually kinetic or blast since high OQ+SR ferrous metal is fairly common. I imagine you would like to keep at least kinetic in base. Other than that, I'd say try to find better resources for your electric layers.

*note that the new JTL resources aren't capped on anything, therefore high effectiveness electric layersare now technically possible.WhetherJTL copper/sil ore with the right stats has/will spawn on your server is a different story.

hehe ya i just mined a million units of 870 oq/sr copper for use in any potential electric layers using the new fermy sili ore.

as for low stun high base... might want to try cold layers if your siliclastic sucks... thats assuming you have a nice 900/600 carb ore.

I made a bunch of 18% stun 70% stun comp when I was 10 point and ive been selling it pretty steadily... (I made 90 suits... ~70% is sold now, all the chestplates)

Might want to consider focusing on just chestplates... I sold those really fast... people like to buy 10 slicing chestplates at a time so they can get high 8x-90% base. say 50k or so for 144 units of crism and 120 units of vertex.

Could also make crates of gloves boots and chests with low stun... those sell the best due to the reverse armor hole.(lol people will pay 20k for gloves and 50k for a chestplate when a glove uses 25% the wooly and layering materials as a chest... max profit there)

that's a given, I think that by far 12 points have the largest advantage when it comes to making stun armor.

makes it all the more easier to hit 40/67 stun comp.... I can BARELY make that with 11 points and very very good resources

if you are using a really good old crism or vertex... i suggest using that for all stun... if u can get 40 stun then do that... use a lesser crism and vertex to do teh pve mixed suits.. because in heavy stun suits you need ever point you can get to get it up in base.. but for the pve suits u get bailed out by the other layers....

so save teh stuff you're currently using and use your current format with a newer more abundant crism and vertex

Were all 3 layers stun layers? If not, which were which, and what kind?

Everyone else, thanks so much for your input! Lots of info to mull over here.
I had been hoping, though, for an answer to the more specific question: Is it possible to get in the area of 10% - 15%ish stun using only one Stun layer? I know that with other resists, there are different strategies for different results, i.e. max resist on one layer, vs. stack 2 or 3 of the same layer maxed on base, so that base carries the resist along with it.

Any and all stats on exactly how you experiment your stun layers, what other layers you use with them and why, and the end result numbers would be hugely helpful in deciding which way I should go.

Thanks!!

Sure, you can do 10-13% stun with only one stun layer. Just max the special on that layer. Theoretical max on any layer special resist is 15%. Given that the crism used in stun layers has a low cap on the SR, realisticly the max is about 13% stun per layer. This is how you get 39-40% stun (13 * 3, note the hidden fractions). It's purely additive.

One thing I shouldnote is that stun, unlike other layers, is not added on top of base effectiveness in composite (because it starts as a vulnerability; composite has no inherent base resistance against stun to add to).

As a 10 point smith on Intrepid, I was able to hit 35% Stun 58% base with the stuff I just had laying around. This was my first crack at doing stun armor. I'm now patiently doing the waiting game to see if it sells at all. If it does, I've harvested new resources, so I should be able to boost those stats to some degree. Now only if I was a 12 pointer.
