Thread: Novice AS armour worth buying?

Hey all,

Finally made it to Novice AS (I dont grind - so Im in for the long hard slog!). Setup shop with some entry level Mabari (ie: 1 experimentation point) in an attempt to target other new players who perhaps cannot afford the awesome stuff that is most commonly sold.

So far as I can tell from what little Mabari compares to mine (<10% resists), I am priced acceptably. But my question here is not whether the price I am asking is what people will pay, but rather whether the price I am asking is worth it.

For the new guy starting out, is 3 or 4k worth it to kit himself with armour (chestplate, leggings, boots & gloves) that provides 6% resists and is vulnerable to energy attacks? So far I am heading towards Pistoleer myself, and have been testing armour I made and its really hard to tell what effect the 6% resists are gaining me.

the thing is, a lot of people need educating about armour, so seeing 8% resists as opposed to say 20% resists on Mabari, it may look like a no contest win.

But, most mobs hit with an AP of 0, against any armour with an AR of 1 (all armours to date) you get a 50% reduction in damage, and so with the 2 above example armours, thte 8% suit gives 54% protection, whilst the 20% suit gives 60% protection... not so much of a difference now...

I didn't grind either, and happily sold suits throughout tatooine, at Bestine, Mos Entha and Mos Eisley. I sold my armour in individual pieces on the bazaar, with a complete suit costing around 15k.

If you plan on doing this, I highly recommend you make your template 0-0-0-4 before going up any other tree. This tree gives you 7 experimentation points which will then allow you to make that 20% Mabari. I practiced on Mabari chest peices, to get those 4 boxes. (Fortunately I had a friend who is a master tailer with synthetic cloth crates at the ready) and now I am building up my tree from there. I am currently 2-1-1-4 and making excellent money selling armormainly in Mos Eisley and through referrals.Note thatI do not reccommend anyone start the layers tree until at least PA 3, but that was a training mistake on my part. This would be my reccommendation for the best order to work through armorsmith if you aren't grinding all the way up to master by practicing on chest pieces. (A practice which I have stated on several boards that I think is a TERRIBLE idea!)

Knowing what I know now, if it were me, I would go like this:

Start gathering resouces needed for all the different armors, including composite. Continue to collect resources all the while.

0-0-0-4 - Practice on Mabari chest pieces

2-0-0-4 - Make Mabari, chitin, and wookiee ceremonialarmorwith as high of kinetic resist as possible to sell to newbs. Play around with expiermenting on both the segment and the armor so you can see how putting points in certain places affects the stats. So what if you make a few useless pieces, it's justchitin.Use the advanced segments as soon has you have the schem and the resources. Also do a little tantel to get the hang of it, but save actually making it for being a master becausethis is onethat current masters do make, thereby making your stuff look like crap!

2-0-2-4 - Make PSG's and some more Mabari, Chitin and Ceremonial.

4-0-2-4 - Make padded armor with low encumberance to sell to people who want it instead of clothing. Play around with other wookie armors and Ubese, again, to get the hang of it. Also try using some looted segments and segment enhancers at this point so you can see how they work. ** If you did want to dapple into layers, I would not do it before this point because layers can only be used in tantel, ubese, padded, and composite.

4-0-4-4 - Make better PSG's, low encumb padded, high kinetic mabari and chitin. Pay attention to what types of resources and what resource stats are giving you the best armor stats.

4-4-4-4 - Try out each layer in different sets of armor. Pay attn to what the layers do to all of your stats.

Master!- Make composite, padded, ubese, tantel, chitin, and mabarithat ROCKS because you put in your time and know what you are doing!!!

This would be an ideal plan of attack for the long-term master Armorsmith. I highly reccommend it.

Yeah, this isn't a problem. The armor you make will still have some worthy resists, although, not comparable to comp or well made ubese, definitely not useless, especially for newer players going after the weaker mobs. Unless you've got great friends who are going to supply you will all of the hides, metals and chemicals you'll need to make the elite armors, you'll need to spend a lot of time mining high OQ, SR, MA, UT, DR (my order of importance) minerals and chemicals and hunting the high quality hides and bones.

After you climb the tech tree, might as well go for personal armor. There are several unexploited markets (at least on my server). Most masters don't bother making Tantel, Padded, Advanced Chitin, Advanced Mabari but they're some of the best looking armors. But there is demand for them and you can find a lot of well paying customers making these. At least, that's my experience.

A while back, I rediscovered the joy of bazaar grade newb/smith Mabari. It’s great for scouts-ranger that are harvesting resources off creatures below their combat level. For me the base % is pointless. I just buy the cheapest (NEW)parts available. I do see a lack of the newb armor on the bazaar. Sometimes I cant find what I need and will resort to using my composite. There’s defiantly a market for it.

Thank you for the clarification on how the AP vs AR works out. So it would seem that Novice AS armour actually does have a place

Shop is setup, and stocked. On its first day of operation, we sold 4 armour items and a similar amount of weapon items (in business with a Weaponsmith who runs the other half of the shop). Not a whopping sell-out, but I'm happy that it is evident that this can become a success without being a MAS!

Now a few messages of thanks, and special offers to customers who buy the most, and Im sure I can gain some regular clientelle.

What I did, and still do, if offer free repairs for all armor I make, and If i fail on the repair (falls apart) a replace the piece for free.

That built me up a loyal customer base, which was nice because I was a solo crafter.

Personally I would go up personal armor to ubese then up technique all the way. This way you can make some nice adv chitin and sell it to new players (set up shop outside Mos Eisley). Chitin is a great armor but most master only make ubese and comp so there is a market for well made chitin.
