Thread: minor test results

So I ran some quick tests this weekend on a few things people have had questions on. Note that these tests are just starting points- feel free to conduct your own tests and post the results here, especially if you think mine are wrong.
1. AP vs. PSG's - I equipped a PSG and no armor and shot at the target with various types of energy weapons, including a T-21, Laser Rifle, Republic Blaster and Scout Blaster. Against the latter three the PSG functioned as armor would- as AP1 armor against the Scout Blaster and just the resists operating against the Republic Blaster and Laser Rifle. The results fromthe T-21 were somewhat odd- it seemed that sometimes it blocked damage and sometimes it didn't. The damage it blocked was very low.
2. Decay rates of sliced vs. unsliced armor - I equipped a 78% sliced chestpiece and shot at it with a non-ap cabine. Around 400 points of damage hit the chest area and 40 points got through. The armor declined in condition by 3 points.
I then equipped a 74% unsliced chestpiece and repeated the procedure. Around 350 points of damage were done to the target and 44 points of damage got through. The armor declined in condition by 6 points.
This is a very quick, not terribly well controlled test, but it seems to indicate that armor decay works exactly the opposite of how we've been told it should. The unsliced armor decayed twice as fast as the sliced armor. Note that the only really relevent numbers here is the amount of damage that got through- this is the factor that supposedly causes decay (although, like everything, this has not been definitively established recently). Also, for those who are wondering, both pieces were fully repaired and the sliced armor had a lower max condition than the unsliced armor.

Awesome test Jaato. You just made a lot more work for the Smuggler in my PA now. 
Looks like I'll be slicing my composite from now on.

I'd encourage you to check my results, though- it's always possible that I made a mistake. The results certainly were surprising, though.
One thing I'd like to do in the future is to quantify the decay rates- how fast does armor decay per point of damage that it lets through?

Well if you take decay/damage taken , you get:
Sliced - 3/40 = 0.075
Unsliced - 6/44 = .1363
Your resist percentages are fairly close to where it shouldn't be such a huge difference like these between the two. I'll try to run some tests myself also.

I was my understanding that the armor decays based off the damage that actualy makes it thru the armor.
Therefore, in your test, the armor took more 'decay' when more damage got thru (44 instead of 40) is the result I would expect.

Condition is a measure of how much damage the armor can absorb before becoming useless. It is expressed as two numbers, the current value and the maximum value. In fig.1, the bone gloves are in perfect condition as both the current value and the maximum value are 8722. The amount of damage taken by the gloves is equal to a fraction of the damage that penetrates its defenses. Once at 0 condition, the armor no longer provides protection. An armor repair tool can be used to restore condition but this will reduce the armor's maximum condition and may destroy the armor entirely. Armor whose maximum condition is 10 or less may not be repaired.

Aye, that's very true. I did 44 points of damage in the second case, but only 40 points in the first one. That four points shouldn't have made more than a point of difference in the condition decrease, though (it's only 10% more damage). The test really needs to be repeated with a larger sample size, although running this test is kind of a pain (since the chest area, the largest area, only gets hit about 25% of the time.

Yea, very tedious. Probalby have to put on a full suit, do a single shot, record the damage, find where it hit, determine the decay, and repeat.
Would also be interesting to test this on multiple armor types, IE bone vs composite.

What about starting a wookiee test char and useing the chest there? I mean, that thing covers alot of hitlocations so would make testing easier. Or if a new char is out of the question, perhaps ubese, the jacket is rather huge. This non-composite approach won't be getting you all the numbers you initially wanted though.

Both were at perfect condition when I started. The sliced armor had been repaired once, the unsliced armor was new.
