Thread: non master armorsmith ?

I'm considering becoming an armorsmith with one of my characters, not master armorsmith mind you but more of a specialist in low level armor.

Every smith seems to be able to make fantastic composite, which everyone wants - but it's expensive. What I was considering doing was doing something along the lines of 3404 (or would 4304 be better?) armorsmith with master artisan.

I'm thinking that I should be able to make some really good bone armor (yes.. i know.. bone armor.. lol) as well as chitin, tantel, and mabari .. but leave the composite to the master smiths.

I wonder though, what I could really accomplish by way of resistances on these armors - assuming I use stuff like krayt scales/segments/whatever, still using reasonable resources (800-900 oq/sr/whatever statsare necessary).

I don't want to necessarily compete with composite for grinding (ala 75-78% ubese/padded) but would like to hit atleast 50% kinetic/energy on whatever type of armor I build.

Is this a reasonable goal or just a pipe-dream ?

Basically I would like to outfit non-combatants and newbies in different types of armor, rather than seeing everyone running around in composite. -- bring a little variety to the galaxy =)

I'm thinking these pieces could probably sell for 5-10k per piece, and stay affordable and effective (assuming acceptable resistance percentages can be reached.) Even if I don't make money on them, I think it would probably still be something enjoyable to do.

thoughts? suggestions?

Well, I think that if you are looking for a niche in the market using armor as more of a fashion, there is some dmeand. Ive had several entertainers looking for different sorts of padded and mabari completley based on style. Although the demand is not great, it should be enough to eventually cover costs.
However, if you are looking to get into the market as a non master selling different armors for their resists as well, I dont know how much luck you will have. If someone is looking for padded, chitin, tantel, or what have you, and wants the best resists that armor can offer, a master and certainly a 12point master will be able to produce higher quality. So if you try to put yourself in the consumers posistion, and you want a nice set of chitin, will you buy a mediocre set off a vendor or will you ask a master to custom make you one. I know what I would do.
But if this is for more appearance rather than function you will be able to use lesser quality resources and therefore charge less as a "fashion armor". You may have some luck with the crowds of entertainers and crafters who look at it as style. A stocked vendor with different colors and styles of the lesser used armors might work as fashion vendor.
Good luck

yea.. that's kind of what I was going for.. but also, for new characters and players - to stock affordable armor, that isn't complete crap.

The average new character takes a couple days to get 10k under his/her belt if they haven't played the game before.. and I was just thinking of offering a decent product at a price they couldn't refuse

the question still remains..

what kind of resists would a non master (that has the experimentation tree) be able to pull off on these 'lower end' armors?

no one has tried to see what the maximum resists they could get on armor other than composite, ubese, or padded?

I don't think many have tried to see what they can make at 4004 or even 4444. I'm pretty sure you can't max out the resists unless you are using poor resources. As far as padded people are hitting 80/52. Ubese I can make 76/28. I remember seeing posts on chitin being in the 60 range.

I'm 4104 and I make and sell Chitin on the bazaar on Tatooine, at 34-35% Kinetic resistance and 11-12% base, putting all EXP points into special resist, no layers (yet). I make about 2 complete suits a day and they all sell out daily--6k helmet/chest, 5k leggings/boots, 3k everything else.

I'm with you though...it's not so much about making the best armor as it is about finding a market for amor you CAN make. Price it low enough and someone will buy it. At the moment, I'm happy making enough money from sales to cover my costs.

I'm not even going to try competing with composite armorsmiths until I'm Master.Sincecomposite isgenerally the biggest moneymaker, that is generally allanyone sells. I'm going after the newbie market, those who are just beginning to understand how armor works, but don't have the cash to buy an entire suit of composite or Ubese yet. I've seen trash selling on the bazaar for more than I am asking. 6k for a 20% kinetic pair of chitin boots? Come on... Tantel is only a partial suit, and the resists aren't that great with the materials I have (around 20%), so I stay away from it. Because of all the vulnerabilities, with kinetic being the most noteworthy, I consider bone armor a rip-off for anything more than 1000 credits per piece, so I don't waste my time with it.

Here's something to ask yourself...do you really want to use all your great resources on lower-end armor, or would you rather save it until you can make composite, and then make the best composite instead?

well.. as I don't plan on mastering armorsmith - I doubt I will ever be making any composite at all.

I plan on this character being more of a roleplay experience

master artisan

novice merchant

master smuggler

armorsmith 3404 - or 4304 -- not sure which would be more effective

- making better segments, or being able to make acid layers. I am leaning towards 4304 though

As far as the resource use - I really won't mind using it on a product that I enjoy making - assuming I see the benefits (product selling - and more visual variety as I wander around the cities that I would be selling it in or around - places like mos eisley, bestine, theed.

i'm just tired of seeing everyone wandering around in composite - and I know experienced players would not be using the armor I make, unless they want to play unbuffed (ala rangers, ch, crafters, etc). I would be content to sell the stuff for cost and not make more than a few credits profit on it - it's a game afterall, not a job - my goal is not tospend day upon day in the quest to make millions of dollars- that's a real life goal - I just want to have fun - heh.

But in order to do that, I need to be able to justify it : ie: spending millions on resources and not see the same dollar value coming back (not necessarily profit) - so that I can buy new resources and continue the process. And players of course will not buy the armor if it is 10% resistance crap.

From what you said though, it seems as though it should be quite possible to reach 50% resistances on most armor types - if I can make my own segments and layers that don't completely suck - and get some boosters (krayt/kimo scales/segs).

I was going to consider doing something similar on another server with weaponsmith - but rather than mastering the profession - using low end/base krayt tissues (that I would harvest myself) in place of crafted components in everything - making up for the difference in experimentation points. -- but weaponsmith is one nasty grind... and, I've found armor crafting (even if it is just bone) to be a pretty fun time waster
