It's because you can get ANY resource ever to spawn in the game. 30k of the best resource can make a big difference sometimes.
It is only a one time use. Sometimes you just can't find what you want. I usually just use the resource from a deed to make personal items.

it's one use item. No 30k does not sound like much, but when your in a pinch and are short one that 1 nice resource, these help a ton. Also nice to have to get ahold of long extenct resources that you need.
Perfect example is Plexite Amourphouse gemstone, on flurry it's been a long time since we've had a spawn and an eve longer time since we've had a good spawn. The resource deeds have allowed me to get this and make the Layeres I need for my customers, it cuts into profit margines, but then again it lets me make and sell quad energy layered suits for 1.5 million.

...the 30k vet reward, cause I can't get my head around this. It's a one-use item, yes? If so, even if you pick a very rare resource, it's only 30k, which isn't much and wouldn't go very far. But if it's a multi-use item it seems like you could just stop using harvesters and just deed yourself everything you need. I am much confused over the appeal of the 30k resource crate, and why it goes for upwards of 3mil on the trade boards.

wouldnt it be sooooo cool if u could get GDK Scales!! imagine 30K of those! RIS armor would plummet as a direct result!!

That's what I do as well, especially now that I only have 64m range on survey. I'm getting a guildie to make me some interplanetary survey droids. Send those out to get all the names of what's spawning, use the resource deed to look them up.Every planet fully surveyed for everything I might need without ever having left Dantooine 
Lazy crafters FTW!
I haven't actually used a resource deed on anything yet, but I can see a couple spots where I might have to in the near future.
