This is a rant, skip it if you don't want to hear the truth about this profession.
Back in January I picked up a blue box and it says to me, "Become an armorsmith." I did as it commanded. I then did artisan, carbineer, marksman, and another 17 or so professions. But I always was an armorsmith. I made good credits off it, built a nice business, and pretty much retired. My story isn't unusual, day late, credit short. Kept grind while the numbers kept increasing. Stopped grinding at fencer only to have Nightsisters increased. Blew alot of my fortune on RIS junk before the credit nerf. No biggie. I have about everything I could want, 500 clothes, nice location in a player city, good friends, and I'm still an armorsmith.
Why am I an armorsmith? Good question.
Bone armor. This isn't armor. It's something, but not armor. It's junk, and I can't even make it very good, although I am a master armorsmith. It's artisan stuff. Figure they'd fix that. Naw, gotta revamp the revamp of the revamp of Jedi. Oh, yeah, we need to adjust faction bases too. We didn't get that right the last 4 or 5 patches. Anyways, bone armor, oh boy.
Chitin. It's got potiental. Decent ham, good kinetic, but alot of organics. Wretched color selection. Can you make it in black? How about red? Oh, nevermind then. How many times you heard that?
Tantel. Don't get me started. I'm sure the initial lightsaber resistance bug hasn't been fixed. Oh the stun is nice if you combine it with some exceptional loots, but come on, it's 3 pieces and doesn't have an advanced version. This stuff is pretty good for piecing together a Halloween costume, but that's about it. Really, like chitin, even if this armor had an advanced version it requires way too many organics. To make a profit, this armor should be slightly more costly than composite. Just too many different organics.
Ubese. Probably the only armor beside composite that's worth anything, and it's really too fragile to last more than two whole buff sessions. Nice ham, great kinetic resistance. The fact it only uses two organics is really nice, neither being specialized.
Padded. Great colors. Wanna-be Boba Fett biceps. Dumb helmet. Too bad it requires too many specific organics to be practical. Not to mention it has about half the resistances of composite. Junk. I have about 200 low-ham segments I use to make decorative padded armor, but honestly, this stuff should cost twice as much as composite because of the resources involved.
Composite. Ah, the stuff. Hey, it's nice. Make all the fuss you want about the revamp. Two thing to consider: 1). the developers never invisioned us 'smiths hording the best resourcesfor over a year (i'm done harvesting btw) and being able to make the relatively lightweight stuff we see floating around that can be sliced to 90%. 2). buffs. It's not the armor, it's the buffs. Go kill a sevortt lair without buffs in just your armor, time yourself. Now go and do it without armor, but with the buffs. End of story as to which one is more important to "God Mode." Futhermore, most of the PvP 90/38 stuff wouldn't be wearable without buffs. Thanks to 4 piece suits, you can make even heavier armor to be worn! Great job. No really, composite is probably the easiest armor to make, the best, AND players can make it any color they want any time (as long as they aren't wearing it.) That's my biggest complaint. I could make alot more armor sales if the customer had to buy it like every other piece of worn item... the color I make it. Ah, then we'd have everyone in black composite and instead of everyone wearing composite... everyone would be wearing black composite. Oh, please sacrifice my sales in order to give the game "immersion." No really, I can ceede the first point, the resource hording issue. But instead of fixing what needs to be fixed... we get Jedi content, crap loot to decorate my house (yes this is what i REALLY need, my house will look cool as the servers shut down to lack of customers because the game itself has a horrible combat system), and faction base adjustments.
Wookie armor... naw... I don't make the stuff. I'll admit that armorsmiths had it good early on, but now days they don't. I feel it's always better if the developers hate someone more than me, that's where the Wookies come into play. Really, organics, organics, organics. Oh, and we give the architects some love by giving them another customer for a harvester type. Yeah, I got one, it's in my backpack because wood is retarded.
Ithorian armor. Oh boy. Looks like composite. Smells like composite. Weighs like composite. But it's Ithorian armor. Hey retards, why can't you make graphics for composite "variants", no, that's asking too much.
I'm not even going to mention RIS, which I am certified, or the other "armor" (oh and how I use that term loosely, more precide "wearable droid component")... those are jokes, and poor ones at that.
Okay, so as you can see, there's only one type of armor that is practical to make. No biggie. It's been that way, just another broken part of the system.
Tailor subcomponents. Painful to deal with, but I make do. If I had a Jedi slot, not this FS garbage that we have now that ruins my character that I've played for over a year and forces me to grind another character to be my armorsmith (there's obviously some reason why I consider myself an armorsmith, maybe I just like it, dunno), I could afford to dedicate my entire class to armorsmith/tailoring.
PSG. Useful... for PvP. Add in 20 some-odd skill points to master artisan.
Merchant, hehe, long overdue on the merchant changes, but still was painful, add in a dozen or so to havea decent shop.
Need scout to harvest for myself, did I mention all the organics it takes? Yeah I guess I did. Need something to kill whatever you are going to harvest. Large quanities, master a combat profession.
Basically the armorsmith is probably the most skill intensive profession since the BH/scout "fix". I enjoy AS, I'm not a 12 point smith, I should have cozied up to someone before they jumped to CoH, EQ2, WoW I guess, but I don't recommend it to anyone with just a single account or someone who hasn't unlocked prior to the "awesome" content of the village of idiots idea. It's just not practical.
I sincerely hope that the combat revamp does make other armors more useful. I hope it does allow for more custom looking characters in the game. But I also hope they consider the factors envolved in making those armors and simply do not "chop the top" and leave the armorsmith a (slightly less so than other profession, but still) broken profession (which all profession are bound to be broken in a broken game.)
Hmm, I really don't know why I wrote this. It doesn't matter if you reply. If you are a developer, and are reading this, you should probably be fired for being incompetitant (regardless if I can spell the word correctly or not.)
Have a nice day.

nice rant, and I must say that a lot of your complaints are going to be addressed.

I just got master armorsmith lastnight, and already I'm really surprized of what it takes to make wookie hunting armor...
My two other chars Terv and Tervert are both wookies. Honestly the dev's must hate us. I prob won't even attempt to make any hunting armor until I can get relativly decent spawns for most things needed. And pretty much everyone making armor on our server has dropped off the face of the earth or the prices are kinda nuts. I'm hoping a lot changes with the Combat Upgrade.
Side note: For the padded armor can bio-reinforcement cloths or syth cloth be uses in the padded armor? I might have messed up while making a set if so...lol.
