Thread: Any difference between equal special and base protection?

Example:

1) comp helmet with energy layer so 80 special protection

2) comphelmet with kin layer and sliced to 80% base (with energy in it)

I've been told by an AS on my server that when hit by a weapon with higher armor piercing (T21 for example) then the light armor protection from the comp armor the helmet with the energy in the special protections (1) will provide more protection then the helmet with energy 80 in the base (2). He called a figure of 50% better even I believe.

Now I always thought that 80 energy is 80 energy wether it's in specials or base. Can somebody confirm his theory or my believes?

It would be really cool if thats how it worked (or what they do in the CU) but I think 80 is 80 is 80. :/

Thats why you see some many people who want energy/kin/blast in the base so they can -potentially- slice it to 90%

yes as far as I'm aware it doesn't matter if it's special protection or normal protection, it's the whatever the % is. A lot of people go for Electric layered or stun layered comp with as high of base as possible because of this in hope of slicing it up to 90%.

At one point I also thought resists in special were better against high AP weapons, and did some tests that I thought proved it. I was wrong though and hadn't really done a valid test. After doing a proper test it's clear that resist in special is exactly the same as resists in base. (In terms of protection... there still is the obvious difference in slicing of course).

This result has been verified in actual tests by other people, some of whom cruelly showed me the errors in my initial testing

It's been shown that the difference between special and base is not the way it protects, but in the design of the armor.

Base can be sliced, special protection cannot. Native special protections can be raised easier than base can (doesn't apply to specials added by enhancers or layers)

So, it's a matter of design, not a matter of the way they behave being different.
