I think that's just the risk you take for putting it on a vendor, if it's so important for an order to get to a specific person then make the trade directly. Otherwise, figure that you sold an extra.

If it's nothing you can't remake, or if it's something you'll lose money on, never put it on a vendor. Only use pick-up vendors for special orders you can easily replace.
