I'm a tka/doctor at the moment, and i'm looking for a template change to AS/tailor/merchant. My original plan was to make money with tka to use for doctor, and use doctor to make money for the template switch. Is this a good idea? If so, how much money will I need to get a good spark started in the life of AS. Or can I just start out any time I like? Thanks.

Depends on how you want to do it. The above poster indicated a grind to master. I decided on AS when I started the game and had no real help with money...so it took a while. I mined my own resources and funded the harvesters by running survey missions and hunting my own hide.
The choice is yours.
Keeping it and actually buying the highend resources is another story. I would hang on to doctor to fund the resources to make composite. Otherwise, you're looking at a few months to collect anything decent for armor crafting.

i mastered as about a month ago
even with some good resources from a guildie, not to mention nearly a million credits, im still not making enough money to stay afloat by making armor, have to run missions for income
