Thread: Are we reading Armor Stats Correctly?
Special Protection means only that the Resist(s) listed under it are inherently 'good' for that armor. And by 'good', I mean not sliceable. When an AS adds a layer to move a Base Resist to Special Protection, it will also become unsliceable. I'm not certain, but I believe that the default Speacial Protections for armors tend to be easier to get to a higher % resist on than for the default Base Resists. However, slicing can sure mix things up.
The difference between Special and Base is this: Base can be sliced higher and Special cannot. 1% of resist in Special is the same as 1% resist Base. Some may want to believe that Special Protections are just that- special, but the truth is that slicing usually makes them about the opposite as it isn't overly difficult to get Base to a point where it can be sliced past Special.
As you may have guessed, I'm not an Armorsmith myself, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night ![]()
I think what he's referring to is the AP effect of armor. But that affects base as well as special resists.
At least, that's the only place I've heard about a 50% off the top (AP0 weapon against AP1 armor takes 50% of the damage right off the top.)
For every level of AR>AP the damage is halved before the resists come into play. So for a AP0 attack vs 80% (AR1) armor will lead you do an effective resist of 90%.
For every level of AP>AR the damage is increased 25%. In the case of an AP2 attack vs AR1 80% armor you will get an effective resistlevel of 75%.
By the way, since damage taken to condition is modified by the damage passed through the armor (after resists) then higher resist shields will often last just as long or longer than high condition ones. Atleast for the higher end generators.
To my knowledge there is no difference between special and base resists other than:
- special resists increase faster when experimenting (except for the resists that were moved to special using a layer)
- slicing has no effect on special resists

And to the original poster, notice you're referring to the way armor "should" work. I do believe every test I've seen on armor resists have proven that special and base are essentially the same.
Your posts here seem to be a bit confused. You start out with "I was under the impression..." as if you were talking about the way it IS. Then you switch to the way it SHOULD BE (in your opinion). Well, I don't have any opinion one way or another about how it should be, but the information in the stickied "Complete Guide..." document the way things are exactly. 80% in special blocks the same amount as 80% in effectiveness. This isn't opinion, it's tested fact and something you can easily test it yourself if you wish to verify (always a good idea anyway).
For most players standpoint there is no difference. Both Special Protection and Effectiveness are treated identically in combat. In armor crafting, Special Protection can usually be raised separately from and faster than Effectiveness. In addition, Special Protection is not raised by an Effectiveness slice.
