Thread: Really starting to feel that RIS is nothing but a time sink and/or eye candy...

... because the base HAM costs are all over the place. This has become apparant to me after making a set of boots last night.

I'm using triple kinetic layers that were made during the one day crafting changes. They're 5% base (100% quality experimentation), 4% kinetic, and 15/15/15 HAM. Yes, very heavy layers, but suitable for what I'm shooting for with 80% kinetic, mid 70's on base, and not really concerned with HAM (since no one else on Shadowfire seems to be - when in Rome...) so they seemed to be a good choice.

When I made my chest plate, the HAM was comparable to a comp chest. I'd be happy about the 76% base, but then again there's a total of 10% enhancement to base in the segment. The helmet was more encouraging, since the HAM turned out considerably lower. The boots were an utter disappointment. The HAM on them is about 80/100/60. Yeah, I know I used heavy layers, but that's worse than my comp boots would be with the exact same layers- net result is that it appears that the base HAM onRIS boots is greater than the base HAM on comp boots. From what I've seen here, the base HAM on the chest is similar, and the base HAM on the helmet a significant amount lower between the RIS parts and their composite counterparts.

So what is the point of this stuff? It can't be the higher base - if I used the same Janta hides in a comp chest plate it'd be 80% kinetic, 76% base as well, but without the acid vunerability. The only advantage I can see is the fact that each piece only takes on segment - I get to make five pieces with my lot of five 7% Janta hides instead of just one chest plate. If that's it, I'm sorry, but that's pathetic. Getting the loot isn't a problem. I'm swimming in Nightsister shards and layers, and Janta hides are pretty easy to find due to the solo groups grinding missions of Dantooine.

I'm really puzzled. If the base HAM costs are not lower than composite across the board, then what's the point? Expend a ton of effort to be destroyed by and bounty hunter with a scatter or rifleman with a DXR-6b?

Hahah have a clue. Ris is the biggest insult to players there is.. Its the Devs giving us the big "rude gesture"

I imagine the first smith having SUFFERED through hundreds of hours of camping and NPC chasing to learn schematics, Gather good resources, camp the NPC drops and finally make a piece...... and then going postal on the DEVs when sees Ubese is better.

We probably never heard from this pioneering smith....because he quit on spot, deleted game and reported his SWG acct credit card charge as fraud.

Some people think its eye candy...but I think its more of a "look at me, I wasted hundred of hours to get this crappy armor."

I got 38/66/0 after a slice on my RIS pants without spending a point in HAM reduction.

Anyway part of the problem is that unlike composite you have to spend points increasing both base and kinetic resist leaving you with no points to reduce encumberence

Those were awesome pants. I guess the jist of my complaint is this - imagine what a set of composite pants would look like with those same layers and segment enhancers. My limited experience with this (I've made my cert boots, an interwoven helmet, chest, and boots for myself, and some pants for a customer) is telling me that they'd be even better than the awesome RIS pants you made.

I also fully agree that the fact that one has to experiment the normal way on base and special protection is driving part of this. The other part that I'm seeing is that (at least on some parts) the base HAM costs are all over the place relative to their composite counterparts.

I really don't have too much room to complain. I've looted all of my own components, and pulled four GDK scales in 34 kills. So not much of my time or money (relatively speaking) has been spent on this so far.

The first smith to make RIS was Wicca I believe, and there was a long post from here a little after she finished about what a load of bull RIS is. It's shiny, thats all.

Maybe RIS just doesn't like the heavy layers. Once again, unsliced

And pants unsliced. Not quite as impressive, but made with lesser quality stuff and before the boots were made.

I understand what you're saying, but it's not like there's a hidden encumbrance penalty for using certain layers.

The three kinetic layers I put on to those boots added up to 45/45/45 on encumbrance. If you strip them out, you've got unlayered RIS boots with an encumbrance of roughly 35/55/25 (I made the boots before bed last night, memory is kind of fuzzy). That encumbrance is not much better, if at all, than my unlayered composite boots.

I haven't made pants, so I really can't comment on their rough base HAM. What I can say from my own experience and from what I've seen here is that the base HAM on RIS pieces is not below that of their composite counterparts across the board. From what I'm seeing here, the helmet and pants have a lower base encumbrance than comp, but the chest and boots are equal to (if not worse) than comp made with the same layers / enhancers. With a giant gaping hole in the armor called "acid", where's the advantage?

I thought everyone already understood that. Sure, you canget comparable, perhaps better results than composite, but the cost in both credits and time don't even make it remotely worthwhile.

I'm still planning on making a suit, and I'm going to make a nice one. But I have no misconceptions that it's mainly just a goal or badge so to speak. Wall dressing or conversation piece.

The people that are most disappointed set their expectations too high...even after seeing the results.

any truth to RIS getting upgraded to medium armor? I've been hearing that.

I dont knowwhere the problem is.

With Interwoven R.I.Ssegment and 7% yellow cubeI made 60% Kinetic and 80% base boots with 4/0/1 enc. I am sure 80% Kinetic, 70% base with equal enc is possible with Interwoven R.I.S

RIS was never supposed to by medium armor, that was just a rumor that people wanted to be true. It was always supposed to be light.
