Thread: Just something to think about before you comment on any pending armor nerfs

I don't want this thread to turn into a discussion about and pending changes to armor or combat in general, there's already a thread about that.

What I do want to warn my fellow players about is that they should think twice before they voice their support for any armor nerfs. If you feel things need to change, I urge you to simply keep quiet, as we all know that there's nothing that will stop the combat rebalance at this point, for better or for worse.

I'm saying this as someone who used to play in a profession that was essentially nerfed into uselessness - the bounty hunter. If you go back through some of the old (and I mean OLD) bounty hunter discussions, you'll see that the first correspondent rallied the BH's to support any changes made to the profession, including some nerfs. The logic was that if we got recognized them a necessary and gave our feedback on what the profession should be, they'd listen to our feedback, take it easy on the nerfs, and maybe even fix some of the things that were broken while they were at it.

The reality was that all that did was to encourage the devs to hit us even harder with the nerf bat. Ranged knockdowns, the former bread and butter of the BH in both PvE and PvP were nerfed to the point where they were literally broken. It took months of urging from a new correspondent to get them fixed. There were others, including multiple stealth nerfs to eyeshot's damage mod, but that's not the point. The point is that our support of being "rebalanced" didn't encourage the devs to take an objective view of things, it simply encouraged them to hit us harder (I think of them sitting around saying "well, if the BH's themselves think they're overpowered, they must really be overpowered"). Oh yeah, nothing got fixed in the BH profession until the commandos piped up about heavy weapons and the hologrinders whined about the investigation grind.

The combat balance is coming. At this point nothing will stop it. Armor is getting nerfed. If you're happy about it (I'm pretty neutral, if things don't pan out I'll just hit the old cancel button) then rest assured that you don't need to voice that support to the devs. IMHO, what we should be doing is urging them to make all armor have purpose in the rebalanced combat system, not repeatedly posting about how unbalancing 90% armor is.

IMHO, I think you are totally right.

I went to the corvette the other day also, thinking I might do ok in 79-80%base composite. I got my butt kicked pretty bad. Didn't even seem like my armor worked (it did though when I looked at the combat logs). I could imagine how it would have been if I was unarmored or in 50% composite like a lot of you smiths want for Composite.

Haha...haven't been to the 'vette yet. Maybe this weekend. I'll make sure I make some cheap energy stuff, so I don't mess up any good armor.

The 'vette probably isn't a good example to use. I think it's sole purpose was to create an environment for hardcore PvP guys that were complaining about having to always use a Jawa rifle and stun baton. They got to dust off some other weapons for an hour or so.

I tend to agree with you except for one thing I think we really need to be vocal about, that being hard caps to armor resists. I can't think of anything that would take the fun out of this profession faster than hitting the caps, then knowing that you'll never get better.

You need more than just energy. You need HEAT, COLD, ENERGY,ACID. (maybe stun, didn't ever get hit by a stun attack though)

They are armed with a wide assortment of weapons.

This is just an example of where the game evolved beyond what the devs thought was possible.

Lets just hope that if this does happen then they fix all of the professions. Balance the mobs. And balance weapons.

But his retroactive nerf on armor is what really stinks. Not that it matters much to me. I run around in chitin or padded for normal gameplay. Usually don the composite for the corvette, pvp, or any of the other epic type confrontations. Be suicide to go and do those things in anything less. With decay on insured items (?!?) in place it just would take all of the fun out of being there.

But still. You would have to agree. When I am hitting people for up to 600 max damage with an ap2 weapon and only causing 70-100 dmg only because I am using acid instead of stun. Then some balance is needed.

I stand corrected. As mentioned, I haven't been.

Sorry to have made the off topic response, I just borrowsed through the other thread and got my fill of all the speculation. Which, at this point, is all it is.

Personally, I'm going to play the game regardless. I enjoy what I'm doing now. ThisMAY simply change how some of it is done.

I can only think of one thing that would cause me to possibly cancel (not counting RL issues). That's if something happened to the resources I've mined over the months. Or a change was implemented that made most of them worthless. I'll make whatever armor is available, to the best of my ability.

Without knowing the scope of the "rebalance" I doubt any of us can make comments about what lowering/changing armor will do.

The rebalance might as well be a funny little gray haired man standing behind a curtain at this point. "Combat Revamp" has been one of the moust widely touted upcoming "features" yet backed by so little content. I have no faith in it.

At it's best it will be "The Mother Of All Nerfs".
