Thread: Kinetic Composite Experimentation Question

I am a bit curious to hear how all the other smiths spend their experimentation points on the layers and on the segments for kinetic composite.

Currently I can make 77-79% kinetic composite with two layers--the only catch is my base protection is not that good (56-58%). To make this I bring the kinetic layers in the suit up to 10% and bring the base up to 2%. I do the same with the energy layer that I make to fill out the segment. For each of the segments I spend 6 experimentation points in quality and four in encumberance.

My question is how much do the rest of you bring up the percentages on your layers and would it be better for me to lower the kinetic protection on my layers in favor of raising the base and making tripple layered composite so I still have 80 or near 80 kinetic and have 60+ secondaries?

Well What I do is make triple layered kenetic max out the base to 4% and put the rest into the kenetic that gives me about 6-7 on my kenetic per layer

I then Put 3 layers into an advanced segment maxing out the base again and putting the rest into the ham

that gives me a 31% to the base and the kenetic is at i want to say in the lower 20 -25 region

on my final combine I usually get

80% kenetic

77% elec

and

64% to the base

but its really heavy armor

but I just got my 11 exp point tonight and I cant wait to see what I can do with it

It's a waste to add 20-25 points of kinetic on top of 64% base since the cap is 80% anyway. You are probably better off trying to balance the layers so you barely hit 80% while useing the remaining points for encumbrance. Any small bit of encumbranceremoval on a suit of 3x9 layers will add up pretty fast.

What Krallic said. I don't understand the point of one Energy layer at all. You're making sure that the player cannot have a high resist to Energy by doing so. Energy can no longer be affected by and effectiveness sliceby moving it to a special protection. Do triple layered kinetic with more focus on HAM reduction and you'll end up with a better, more balanced suit.

Dova (and anyone else) please correct if I'm wrong here as I'm still pretty new to the smith game.

First -from what I have seen, all you need to do to hit the 80% kinetic mark is to use layers whose base + special protections add up to 9. So 2/7, 3/6 and 4/5 all work. With my materials, I start with layers that are 2% base. So if I'm going for light HAM I use 2/7. If I want a slightly higher base at the expense of HAM, I go with 4/5. (the reason for this is that I can reach 2/7 using less points than 4/5)

Second -when experimenting on the final combine I *think* I have noticed that once you hit 80% on any special protection, any further experimentation won't raise the base either. The exception is the small bump you sometimes get via durability. Am I correct here?

[EDIT]

Concerning my first point - after reading a reply by Lomar on another thread I now realize what should have been obvious. The "magic number"you need to reach on the layers depends on the quality of the armor that you will be layering. So it's 9 for me today but it could be 8 or 10 for someone else. His (very helpful) suggestion was to first make an unlayered set and use it as a baseline for how you need create your layers.

On the other hand, slicing is much, much more effective at reducing encumbrance. A 2/1 Kinetic/Energy layered suit can have 80% kinetic and 75% energy resists (higher if you have 12 experimentation points) without relying on an effectiveness slice.

What I do to get Kinetic 80%/62% Base:

Layers - 4% base, 5% special, rest of points on durability line

Segment - max out quality line, rest of points on durability line

Armor - max out quality line, rest of points on durability line

This does make a heavy suit, but most people do not care b/c they rely on buffs. The determining factor in the base resist using this process is the quality of the resources. Each time I get a better resource (e.g. better Intrusive ore)I get a bump in base. If i get a better resource for the layer, I usually get to lower encumbrance a couple points.

There is a good post on layers over on the AS forum of swgcraft.com. Reading that made me dizzy at first, but upon rereading it I understood.

Well ok... I think I am going to have to go back and retry my tests on composite layers...

This is what I got with my Triple Kinetic Layered Adv. Composite Segments

Kinetic 80%
Electric 66%
Base 51%

Kinetic Layer was 3% base and 10% Kinetic

83/83/321Helm
299 /122 /87 Chest
129 /216 /86 Legs
83 /98 /85 boots
87 /83 /88 Gloves
83 /80 /87 Right Bracer
83 /80 /85 Right Bicept
83 /83 /86Left Bracer
83 /80 /85Left Bicept

1013 / 925 / 1010

As you can see its a bit insane on the HAMs

I am still trying to figure out a good Balance... But with limited resources I really dont want to waste too much just on experiments like the one above...

So I will take some suggestions from this thread and try a new Kinetic Layer that is around 3% Base and 6% Kinetic with Reduction on HAM from the layer

and then a ADV. Comp Segment that is 2 Layers kinetic and Experimented to about a 20 to 22% base with Some points spent into the HAM costs...

So does this sound like it might work???

Thanks guys!!!

thanks for the help from all of you, espcially the link to the post on swgcrafters, gave me a headache but was the best training on layers i have ever seen.

I spent almost a 2 weeks doing little else but experimenting with various layers and final combines... Made many many gloves in that time hehe.

2% base and 7% kinetic layers allow you to dump a ton of points into durability and significantly lower the HAM of the armor.

Atm using these layers I currently get 80% kinetic 65% Electric 58% Base with only 630 total Mind encumbrance which is the one that matters.

P.S. I have suits that have sliced below 400 encumbrance.
