Thread: My ideas for a new armor crafting system, after the Combat Upgrade

Hello all. With the coming of the "Combat Upgrade," it has been suggested that a new armor system may go into effect, one where players have a better choice in their styles of armor. This is my own idea on how this new system could work. Please post your comments or suggestions, and hopefully the Devs will take this system into consideration when/if designinga new system.

ARMOR STAT. POINTS: After an Armorsmith is done putting the resources into the armor, they proceed to the "Armor Stat. Points" stage. This stage is where Armorsmiths get to pick the protection this piece of armor will provide. Like experimentation, they choose where to use these points. Each point will be worth X% amount of protection, and the Armorsmith inserts each point into a type of damage slot (i.e., Kinetic, Blast, Acid, ect.). The amount of points they can use depends on the resources they used to make the armor. After the "Armor Stat. Points" stage they move on to the normal experimentation stage.

SPECIAL PROTECTION: As I'm sure you all know, each set of armor is better on one (or a couple) of damage types than others (Special Protection). When the Armorsmith crafts the armor, these damage types already have some protection, when the Armorsmith enters the "Armor Stat. Points" stage.

ARMOR SEGMENTS: With some armor not all damage types are available without special armor segments (for example: Composite requires Stun segments in order to protect against Stun type damage). In order for an Armorsmith to place "Stat. Points" in these particular damage types, they must first install damage segments in the resource stage.

CAPS? To prevent armor to get too "uber" in one stat., caps should be applied.

AN EXAMPLE UNDER THIS SYSTEM: Lets say a player needs some Chitin, high Kinetic hunting armor. Under this system, an Armorsmith could max out the Kinetic protection a set of Chitin armor, and even out the rest of the stats with the remaining "Armor Stat. Points."

END RESULT: In the end, a player with bone armor and a player with composite armor could have the same damage protection, allowing any player to be able to choose what armor type they want, and what protection they want.

Now, this system can also be changed so that the amount of "Armor Stat. Points" is based on the skill of the Armorsmith, just like experimentation points. This would decrease the demand for high quality resources, and could add "Armor Stat. Point" clothing attachment loots.

It's an interesting concept, and I applaud the effort . However, two things immediately spring to mind.
First:
How are the HAM costs of the suit determined, and how can they be "tweaked" under this system?

Second:
Although there would be functionally equal stat lines for the different types of armours, I doubt that it will cause a shift in the types of armours that are seen in use. This is because, apart from any resistance issues, Ubese and Composite have the lowest overall creature-based resource requirements. When looked at from that perspective, I can much more easily acquire the resources to make lots of these types than I can any other (and let's not even get IN to Padded...) - so I will tend to make these two types more frequently for general sale.

Other Thoughts:
- I'm a little fuzzy on the exact process you're proposing here, would it be possible for you to give a step-by-step example of what you're proposing?
- Those "armour stat points": would they add a fixed amount to a given resist? or would the result be random in the same way the current experimentation system is?
