With the CU being worked on I'm sure they are already working out a new system. But, I thought I would mention an idea that I had recently. It's pretty simple, but I think it would make more people want to wear armor.
Ok, first of all I'm assuming that encumbrance is going to actually mean something after the CU. So, my idea is that all armor would offer protection to most all the common types of attacks. Each step up in armor would add more protection but would also add encumberance. I think we would see more people wearing bone armor if it was very low in encumberance but offered some protection against all attacks.
I have grand visions of seeing all armor having a use. Pistoleers wanting light armor that allows free movement. Pikeman wanting heavy armor to be able to take up front... etc.
For this to work, armor encumberance should probably effect skill mods that would require freedom of movement such as dodge.
What does everyone think of this?

They mentioned putting in new armor. I have a feeling they are going to add powered armor. For a suit like that... it would probably offer mods like a bonus to damage with a severe hit to speed. Also, it will need a power source like droid batteries.
I am actually dreading the outcome of all this. Most MAS have specialized in making COmp for so long it will be very difficult to make quality armor in different types. Keep in mind that the new armors will be FOTM for a while. Although I agree, seeing something other then comp will be very nice. Personally, I wear a crappy set of padded that I made with crappy Rancor Segments... someone actually asked me where I looted it at. LMAO
On a side note... with Ithorian armor being "nerfed", I have a feeling it was done on purpose to make it inline with the revamp. That's just my opinion.

I don't think new armor is as necessary as just fixing the way the old armor works. Including encumbrance.

I've always tried to keep good quality resources needed to craft the other types of armor except for the two newest wookiee types of armor. They are just too much of a pain. I don't even bother to craft them. I have a hard enough time trying to find hunters to gather wooly hide for me.

/agree 100%
Wookie armor is a nightmare to craft. I have collected some of the stuff I need, but quickly lose interest because no resourcers harvest the stuff needed and it's a huge amount of named resources.

/agree, and it's the sole reason I don't craft anything more than decorative Ceremonial - with even that being somewhat of a chore on occasion.

I also think that padded armor is far more difficult than it's worth. If I priced padded armor the same way I price composite armor it would be priced at well over a million credits. It's funny that composite is actually one of the easiest types of armor to craft and it's also the most protective.

Also agree, though I get more orders for padded than I do for Kash - which actually makes it worthwhile hunting for the decent spawns of organics that are needed. And since most of the hides (scaley not included) can go into other armour as well, it doesn't wind up being as much of an issue as Kash does.
But hunting for all those differnt kinds of wood is more than a tad frustrating. Which leads to many smiths refusing to make it, which leaves our wookie friends in the unenviable position of trying to find armour when only a handful of shops stock it - and few of those who make it have the high-end resources to do it justice.

Having toons that are pure combat and toons that are crafters ( Armor Smith ) I see both sides. I had a toon that was a Wookiee, TKM. I gave away my Armor, weapons, Swoop, money.. everything, all to just strangers. Then I killed the toon. Why? I was tried of paying 700k for good armor. It as well worth 700k, just I was tried of paying that.
