You get the segments at Novice AS.

Make sure you are

1. Using a specialist crafting tool for clothing - not the generic tool artisans start the game with

2. Make sure you are standing next to a personal crafting station.

You shouln't need to at this low level but always check these first

You need to make recon cores. To do this you make segments(which go into layers, optional)which go into cores which go into completed suits. We are a prof that uses sub-components inside sub-componets inside sub-components.

If you're serious about AS, you'll need a factory (at least1- probably more).

And I can only recommend reading all the clickies at the top of the forum

Whatever you do, do not follow your friend's advice to grind with Mabari Chestplates in the post-CU world.

You will need 7 identical cores to make a Mabari chestplate, which means you will be wasting untold numbers of resources on factory segments and cores. This is about the single-most inefficient way to grind right now.

Your best bet is to grind with something like segments or cores. Slow and boring? Yup, but there's really nothing else you could do right now.
