First, no specific armor has better protection stats than any other type of armor within its class, i.e. bone can offer just as much protection as RIS.

Second, as BH/rifleman you have the certs for assault and recon armor. Maybe you have some combat medic in there or some carbineer that would let you wear battle armor, but you wouldn't have the master-level certs you need to wear really good battle armor. That pretty much eliminates RIS as an option.

If you're going up mainly against jedi or NPC marks, recon is your best choice. It has the highest natural energy resists to protect against lightsabers. If you engage NPC marks at range, they respond in kinds, usually with an energy weapons so recon with a PSG is great protection from them. If you mainly hunt player jedi, get a suit of recon beefed up with energy layers for a little additional protection (at great expense).

Your recon choices are ubese, tantel, and mabari and faction armor, which offers higher condition buy no better protection.

For grinding and hunting critters, however, a suit of assault backed by a PSG is your best bet. Most creatures will close to melee with you so assault's higher kinetic protection is helpful. The PSG helps against voritors and klikniks and the like who like to stand off and spit energy at you.

Composite and chitin plus faction armor are your assault choices. Mandalorian is also assault but is so rare it's not worth mentioning in a practical discussion.

Unlayered assault caps at 7000 kinetic 5000 energy. Unlayered recon caps at 7000 energy 5000 kinetic. Capped armor is not that hard to come by.

By adding a full load of energy layers to either armor, you can realistically expect 8100+ energy 3900- kinetic on recon and 6100+ energy and 5900- kinetic on assault.

As for the price, just do a bazaar search. Quicker than waiting for a Bria armorsmith to come along and reply to this thread. Be sure to search under MISC->WEARABLE CONTAINERS, not ARMOR, for suits in packs. Or use this post to find an armorsmith and shoot them an e-mail (avoid tells).

recon armor = great vs. jedi (8200 max energy resistance)

assault = great vs. pve (8200 max kinetic resistance)

battle = medium, max resistance it can reach in either category is around the 7000. If you get it primus layered will give 6600* (max) in both energy and kinetic resistance.
