They are worth it to fill in a few resources here and there, but not to exclusively stock your supplies, obviously.
I would recommend using them on extremely rare resources, and Organics.

I recently used one to boost my cores going into factional armor to 7k Energy... I needed lokian leather and the only good lokian leather on my server the guy wanted 100CPU for 25K.... So I could pay him 2.5 million for 25k or pay 2.5 million for a resource deed and get 30k of the best... in this situation I will make 10 suits of factional armor with capped unlayers stats... these will sell for over a million a set = 10+ million for a 2.5 mill investment plus I will have some of this resource left over.... Worth it to me

I certainly wouldn't use a resource deed for stock armor considering the quanities you need for something like a factory run of cores (e.g. 45k hide). I instead save them for special armor. Personally, I focused on RIS. Layered faction armor is also a good choice--something with which you can make up the cost.
I used them for Naboo bristley and beyrllius copper just for RIS battle cores and Talusian fiberplast for the final combine. Flirted with the idea of getting some primus layer resources, but I just can't justify that financially.

I think it depends on the situation, i.e. what your customers expect.. I need to use resource crates for dant wooly and corr. fiberplast to cap my assault/battle armor, if I don't use them, I'll get my base to around 5990.
The thing in this situation is that I chose to do both, one line of near-capped armor (5950-5990) that I sell at 350k/suit and one line of capped armor that I sell for 400k (50k per suit is roughly the amount of money the 495 units of wooly/fiberplast costs me when I get it from a crate.) - and the capped armor sells much much better than the uncapped.

I haven't had any trouble selling unlayered armor that's NOT capped (100-200 point from it) for 250K on my server. I just don't wan't to play the numbers game. I think anyone who'd pay 50k more for armor with 10-50 points more protection is out of their mind.
But then again, there seem to be LOTS of those people who like those nice round numbers.
