If I need 4 identical segments for a suit of armour, is the only thing I can do to make 4 segments with the same serial number is a factory? Or will using the exact same materials generate a segment with the same serial. Because if I have 4 segement enhancers, I would need a fifth one for the schematic.

Because it seems to me that I would waste a layer and a segment enhancer on the schematic.

Just curious about how this can work out for the least waste of loot.

Identicle stuff only comes from factory crates or critter loot drops. Yes you will need an extra loot as you loose an item making the schmatic, thats what makes loot layered armor a pain to make.
