The max sockets in a single item is 4, the number of sockets that you get seems to be completly random, limited by level you are. I don't think I've ever seen numbers on what level you have to be to get a certain amount of sockets, but it is known that at novice you can not get 4 sockets. Also there are few rules with putting attachments in sockets.
Only skill tapes can go into clothing sockets, and only armor attachments can go into armor sockets.
If multiple attachments are placed in a single item that has the same modifier, only the highest valued attachment will count. So if you put in a +3 melee defense attachment and a +4 melee defense attachment in the same item, only the +4 will work. If you place them in seperate items, both will work.
If an attachment has more than one modifiers, only the first modifier listed will work. So if you have a tape that gives +3 melee defense and +2 pistol speed, you will only get the +3 melee defense. However, if you later add a +4 melee defense tape to the same item, the +3 melee defense skill on the first tape will be ignored and the +2 pistol speed will start working.
And lastly, the total bonus you can get to any skill appears to be +25. If you have a higher bonus than this from multiple items, your skill sheet will show the higher bonus, but it in testing it appears that you actually only gain +25.

Ya you can put skill tapes into them. Like for example I am a pistoleer andif I got a +5 pistol speed tape I could put that into a shirt granted it has a socket to put it into and my pistol speed while wearing the shirt would go up by 5. When you put something into the socket it takes up the use of the socket making it not useable anymore.. you cant take skill tapes out of the socket once you put it in. The best I think you can do is 4 sockets.. I am not 100% sure on max sockets though.

finally hit master tailor last night, /pat on back.
but im still completely perplexed as to how to get 4 sockets on clothing, is it down quality of resources? or is it completely random? or does the level of complexity of the clothing effect the number of sockets?
any advice would be appreciated!

Its pretty much random. As a master tailor you get them more often than someone who isn't, but really not that often. Either force sensitve or skilltape bonuses to assembly also seem to help. Even completely maxed out you will still only get 4 sockets about 20% of the time if you are lucky.

Its hard but it *can* be done! If you have lots of materials make your outfit out of items that will sell and put the ones without 4 sockets on your vendor. You might end up with a really boring crafting outfit (its best not to wear those in public anyway in case you get killed), but you will have lots of clothes to sell!

Yeah that's the reason I don't take orders for "4 socket" items because it's too much of a hassle.

I dont think i want to ask where you do your crafting
Being a pure crafter myself ive not actually died once with my tailor character since i began, but then my shop is in a safe spot on tatooine, all i get attacked by are bandits or kreetleswhich are so weak i can run into my shop or a store house to drop the agro without any fear of lasting harm.
Other than that i sometimes travel to coronet starport for resources where i experiance a lot of danger such as lag-death.

I'm on Naboo and most things there are not so tough except for some of the maulers and plains walkers. Still, I only wear my crafting outfit in my crafting area and I don't usually go outside with it on unless I really have to. First of all it is pretty ugly, but also I would hate for something to spawn next to me and kill me with it on.

My crafting outfit was so cute when I first made it, however, making a master tailor wear the same outfit day in and out is torture! I don't take it off, because I do feel it has a big effect on sockets.

Are 4 sockets still possible? Seems like I can only get 3 on everything :/
