By normal layers I am assuming you mean stuff like kinetic, or stun, etc. that go into a composite. But what do you mean by Nightsister layers, or RIS layers? Are these just an entirely separate schematic, or do you just mean that in the layer creation process, there is the spot for a layer enhancement, and when you use that, you are automatically calling the layer by the name you enhanced it with (for instance, you tossed in a NS layer enhancer into a regular layer - is that what you are now calling a NS Layer?)

There are no "layer enhancers". Layers go into most segments (bone, mabari, and chitin cannot be layered). Segments have a slot for enhancers.

A Nightsister layer is a loot drop that fits into a segment's layer slot(s) and has some value for base effectiveness and some reduction in action encumbrance. A standard Nightsister layer has a base effectiveness of 3% and an action encumbrance of -10, meaning that a segment made with a Nightsister layer will have a base effectiveness 3% higher and action encumbrance 10 points lower than an unlayered but otherwise identical segment.

RIS layers are a schematic granted in the RIS quest, but every RIS 'smith I've talked to does not feel that they are worth the effort. In a perfect world the RIS layers would be ideal, but with the resources required for them generally spawning with stats much, much lower than the resources used in normal layers (acid, kinetic, stun, etc.) they end up equal to, if not worse, than the normal layers which do not require a loot drop to make.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but it seems like you're trying to reinvent the wheel with this thread. The vast majority of your questions have to do with general armorcrafting. The best thing a non-armorsmith can do for themselves if they want RIS armor is to collect the loot components and then look for a RIS-certified armorsmith who's willing to discuss your particular wants and needs with you. Just make sure you collect the loot drops before you start asking around for an armorsmith - I get tells all the time from people who want to plan out their RIS suit before they've experienced the extreme frustration of camping the woolamander temple to kill two easy mobs every 65 minutes or killed dozens of giant dune kimogilas, getting nothing but a ton of disease and weapon/armor decay in return. I tell them to get the components and then talk to me. Not a single one has gotten further than that.

You are probably right in that I am asking more general AS questions, but I really appreciate your help in helping me to understand.

Let me see if I have this right -

Layers go into segments. The layer can either be dropped or looted. The open slots for the segment schematic are a slot for the resources you need, a layer, and a segment enhancer. Then the segment gets put into the armor.

Do I have that right? And is it 1 segment per piece of armor? Again, I apologize for the non-RIS questions, but I feel like a lightbulb went off, and I want to make sure I got it, and its not just me. I read through the AS faq, but not being an AS, its hard for me to conceptualize your armor crafting process.

I only wish you were on my server. I am essentially only 8 GDK scales, 2 Interwoven RIS schematics, and some yellow geo cubes away from getting my armor. Plus I want to collect all the resources myself, so I know exactly what is going into my armor.

Sorry for all the questions. One last one, and I will have everything I need.

Aside from Nightsister Layers, are there any other layers that are looted?

Nope. All other layers are crafted.

Just to clarify - layers go into segments. RIS armor has slots for two layers in the normal segment, three layers in the interwoven segment. Segments go into the final armor construction. Each piece of RIS requires one segment.

When I made my RIS layer, I got 3% base and 0/0/0 encumbrence. That is pretty good, but there is more than just the numbers. First off the feather. Peko Peko ablatrosses are not the easiest thing to find, and are somewhat difficult to kill, which makes getting enough featheres a problem. In my opinion its too much trouble to go to for a componant that does nothing for the peice itself except be required. Second is there are better choices available. The stardard layers can be used to plug vulnerabilites holes, and while they usually will have higher encumbrences, they improve the base while upping another stat as well. NS layers are what I will be using in my suit. They can increase the base by up to 10%, and lower the encumbrence. RIS with 3% base and no encum is good, but 7% with negative encum is better.
