Gotta be a fellow Southerner saying that.

But really, the tailors showed it was customization over a year ago. I don't really feel like finding the thread, but they showed it to be a bell curve whose center moved further toward 4 sockets as the character had more and more customization points. They showed that it was neither assembly nor experimentation by doing a set of tests with a master wearing a +25/+25 suit and then again without the suit and getting the same results either way. I think they made something like 1000 of the same item for each test for statistaical accuracy. They tested at novice tailor and then again at every customization/expt/ass increase. Then, they did the final test with the suit to eliminate 2 of the three variables, leaving only customization. I think they even went back with a different tailor who was 0004 and had him wear the suit and showed he had the same results at 0004 as the first one who did not wear the suit. They also went back and repeated it all for artisan level wearables and showed the same mechanism was in place for socketing of artisan level items.
They did these tests when the first changes to socketing hit and masters who used to get 4 sockets 90%+ of the time suddenly started getting results like we see now. They thought it was bugged, but the dev team stated that the initial state where masters almost always crafted 4-socket items was the bug, and that the 'new' system was the original intent and had been repaired with the patch. This was at the same time that sockets started appearing in armor, so it was more like a year and a half ago, actually.

Side note on Customisation points deciding your chances for 4 sockets:
Wouldn't that mean that any Mando armor pieces made by a Droid Engineer would most likely come out with few or no sockets? Now, that is just mean...

Who knows what the formula looks for in that case

it's not 100% random. The probability of getting 4 sockets is tied to the quality of resources you use (the better the resources the higher the chance of 4 sockets) I've found this to be true for both tailor and armorsmith items. However haven't done enough tests to solidify my theory, however it does seem the better resources you use the more sockets you will get overall. There is however still chance to get 0 sockets with great resources, and 4 sockets with crap resources, but the numbers haven never been fully tested.

Your resources plays a big part, assembly the second, I never noticd a differance in sockets with foods though, but when i take my +25 assembly parts of my suit I do get less sockets more often.
I belive mability plays a big factor, mability is a scale for the quality of the resource in the assembly stage, try it, get a mability resource with low low like 2 then another with near 1k and you will see the big differance, the 1k will almost always get 4 the 2 will get 1-3 randoms.
This I have tested for my self, will I conferm this 100%? no, this game is like a box of chocolets... you never know what your gunna get LOL
