I'm grinding armorsmith now as well. I'm halfway through it now. The way I do it is:

First I made basic segments, any will do, not in practice mode. After doing some of those I switched to the corresponding basic core and using the segments I produced before. I grinded up to appearance 3.

After that you can switch to making ubese shirts. They will give you 94 xp. I've estimated that it would take me approx.27 hours going from apperance 3 to master armorsmith. Effective time.
