I have 30ish folks that have been field testing my armor for the last couple of months and put together a fairly decent bit of stat reports for myself on what is most effective. For me, it just comes down to:

Availability of High Quality Resources

Ease of Mass Construction

Overall Comparibility of Resistances

That is what I look for. It is easier for me to build a high quality set of Chitin, and produce suits in large quantities than it is to do so with Padded or Ubese. These may be good armors for some folks, but to me I normally don't reccommend them to customers unless they desire that armor specifically.

BTW, regarding layers. These components only move resists into the special protection category, they don't actually raise them. As far as I know, the only benefits to doing that is to ensure that resist shows up (since the types of non-special resists on a piece can vary considerably) and to get the higher technique bonuses related to the resist experimentation bar (as opposed to the quality bar).

Somewhat true Grachus. However, I just make schematics and run them through my factory. So in that case, not very much different. The complexity of Ubese makes the successful experimentation a tad more difficult to acheive at a rate that is above Chitin. While this is certainly possible, using generic resources of high quality is a much better draw than waiting for Neutronium Steel, and then hoping it is of good quality.
