Thread: Having Kinetic as Special Resistance on Comp

What's the reasoning behind having 80% Kinetic Resistance asa special effectiveness on comp? Wouldn't it make more sense to use Energy Layers and have the Kinetic left in the base so it can be sliced up to 90%? What am I missing?

I'd recommend Stun Layers with a high base if it wasn't impossible because of the gated SR on Crism Silcastic Ore.

I mean, why would someone not want to keep things on the base so that they can be sliced higher?

Some people prefer Encumberance slices instead of effectiveness since they wear their armor unbuffed.

it ensures 80% Kinetic Effectiveness... don't have to worry bout slices..and if your the kinda person who get attacked by other damage types from NPC's well you can get it sliced up into the high 80's and 90 for that...

Kinetic layers are also the easiest layer as far as resources go. Pretty much every server has had numerous great spawns of metal, and even if you missed the few great spawns of polymer and/or amorphous gemstone, the small amount used means you can get away with using the numerous spawns of those resources that are just shy of being great and still turn out a very workable kinetic layer.

There are 2 reasons why people want 80%kinetic in the special. The first reason has been stated, some just prefer to get enc slices. If you know that most of the mobs in this game are just going to hit you with one damage type, get that one as high as you can and worry about encumbrances. I can make 80Kin 64base sets that are 200HAM less than my 72base stuff. 200HAM is significant even for those who are buffed.

The second reason is that not everyone wishes to purchase 6 sets of composite to get one fully sliced eff set. It just isnt cost effective to pay millions of credits to get 10% more resistance in one area.

In order to push the base high enough to be sliceable up to 90% on unenhanced comp, you have to invest in experimenting the base at the expense of HAM. With an encumberance slice to get the 90% you end up with a heavy set of armor. I make a heavy 12% Stun 90% base unenhanced comp helm that costs around 300 mind.

If you hunt critters that use kinetic attack such as Nightsisters you can get nearly the same protection from 80% kinetic 58% base at 30% off HAM costs. It is also much more cost effective to manufacture. Every suit has the desired resistances, instead of one out of ten. Some are just lighter than others.

While we'r talking about Layers:

What IS it the PvPers whant? Besides the Shock Helmets that is.

I'v been thinking of making composite with Energy, Blast & Heat layers (one of each) but since I'v never played PvP

I'm not sure what the customers whant.

You should never use single layers in armour - it cripples the resistances (unless your customer is aiming for encumbrance slices of course)

If you take for instance standard 2% base, 4-6% special layers (light encumbrance versions of the layers) you'll end up with approximately:

55% base up to 62% base - added on to the top of that, you'll have say 66-68% energy, heat, and blast for instance.

That 68% or so cant be sliced for effectiveness and wont change any higher, though if you do get encumbrance slices (or dont use sliced), it will give a more rounded figure for the resists.

Most people just use one specific damage type as the primary protection (at 80%) and a lower base value for the rest, just to keep it easier for customers options for future slicing - the specific multi layer type is only really a customer specific order, not something that can be mass produced.

a bit off topic, but 72% base?

is that normal on Chilastra?

Yep, as mentioned there is a number of people who like to use encumberance sliced sets for PvE combat... And since most creatures out there deal Kinetic Damage, getting that 80% kinetic special works the best... I just recently whipped up a set of 80% Kin/63% base that I got sliced down to 400/349/396 for the whole set... This allows me to max all of my mind stats (well almost) at 1000/999/999 and still wear the full set unbuffed... It's a nice little perk

However, if your main concern is PvP then I think you are a fool to be using 80% Kinetic Comp... Sure a number of people do... however I think they are all fools so there

I'd be willing to bet that, at the least, the layers were made during the first day of Publish 7. One of Ahazi's 'smiths had a limited run of 74% base comp that was made on that day.

Never say never. I make 80% Kinetic/80% Energy and 80% Kinetic/80% Heat suits with 69% base for some customers. Obviously I've only used one layer of something in there. The first suit is wonderful for the Corette. It saves 9 items of storage for the player who does PvE and enjoys the Corvette. The owners of these hybrid suits are very pleased with the results.

Stun layered composite with high base for at least helmet, chest, pants and boots. The other parts aren't as important but might as well be stun layered too.
