yeah you have to have at least 67% base to be able to hit 90%. you're more likely to hit it with 69 or 70% base

I have a stun helm on starsider that hit the 90% mark with 68% base.

Based on some numbers I stole from the FAQ on the smuggler forum, a master smuggler can do effectiveness slices from 11-35%. This means there are 25 different results of an effectiveness slice, and if we assume that any of theese 25 results have an equal probability of happening we can assume the following statistical probability of getting a 90% slice:
- 66% or less - never
- 67% - 1/25
- 68% - 3/25
- 69% - 5/25
- 70% - 7/25
- 71% - 9/25
- 72% - 11/25
- 73% - 12/25
- 74% - 14/25
- 75% - 16/25
As you can see, the chances will go up a lot by increasing the base by just 1 or 2%. I'm not sure what distribution between encumbrance slices and effectiveness slices is, but assuming this one is a 50/50 split, then you would statistically need to slice 50 pieces of 67% base composite to get a single 90% piece. You would statistically only need to slice 10 69% pieces to get a 90% piece.

Are you sure about those chances? My slicing results have yielded an extremely low quantity of 35% resist slices. Ihave slicedhundreds of pieces and not see a single 35% perfect resist slice.
Could I be slicing it wrong?

Yes, 90% is actually quite easy, once you get your base a little higher. I have made over 30 complete 90% suits (with lots of extra pieces) with base 69% and base 70%. Even if you have to pick an uncommon layer type to use, instead of stun or elec to get the base up, do it. If you can make better cold layers than electric, use them instead.

As I said, I'm only assuming that the slicing process has an even distribution between all the results. Never been a slicer myself, but I just got the impression that it is randomly and evenly distributed from reading a number of posts on the smuggler forum. You do have to be a master smuggler to get 35% slices tho, not just slicing IV, at least from what information I was able to gather.

Hello all,
So my comp armor is base 66 right now finally. Took me a heck of a long time to get to that class but now I'm there.
So I have had a slicer slice over 400 pieces of armor and not once have I gotten a slice that put my armor over 88%. He did some 45% to encumb but out of all that armor my highest was a 88% bracer and a 87% chestplate. I'm begining to think that maybe the cap is 88% and 90% is just impossible but perhaps someone else out there with higher bases has gotten to 90%.
Am I just not lucky?

From what I understand about slicing and armorsmithing. The max effectiveness slice is 35%from a master smuggler and 35% of 66 is 23.When you add that to your base you max out at 89.1 if you get a 35% slice. So, it seems like you need to get your base to 67%. Hope that helps.

In my experience, the higher the base% you start with, the harder it is to get the higher % Eff slices...

Palamin is correct, though I am not sure of the math behind the slicing. You get diminishing returns as the base effectiveness of what you are slicing increases.

With 68% base I sliced up 270 pieces and got 5 at 90%... yay....

I'm making 100 suits of armor for our PA, and we're going to slice it all.
It's 22% Stun, 69% (70% if I use the good Intrusive Ore) base. I figure we should get quite a few suits over 85%.
