Thread: Really starting to feel that RIS is nothing but a time sink and/or eye candy...
'starting to feel'?
I thought we all knew this from the start? lol
I imagine the first smith having SUFFERED through hundreds of hours of camping and NPC chasing to learn schematics, Gather good resources, camp the NPC drops and finally make a piece...... and then going postal on the DEVs when sees Ubese is better.
We probably never heard from this pioneering smith....because he quit on spot, deleted game and reported his SWG acct credit card charge as fraud.
Some people think its eye candy...but I think its more of a "look at me, I wasted hundred of hours to get this crappy armor."
Those were awesome pants. I guess the jist of my complaint is this - imagine what a set of composite pants would look like with those same layers and segment enhancers. My limited experience with this (I've made my cert boots, an interwoven helmet, chest, and boots for myself, and some pants for a customer) is telling me that they'd be even better than the awesome RIS pants you made.
I also fully agree that the fact that one has to experiment the normal way on base and special protection is driving part of this. The other part that I'm seeing is that (at least on some parts) the base HAM costs are all over the place relative to their composite counterparts.
I really don't have too much room to complain. I've looted all of my own components, and pulled four GDK scales in 34 kills. So not much of my time or money (relatively speaking) has been spent on this so far.

Maybe RIS just doesn't like the heavy layers. Once again, unsliced
I understand what you're saying, but it's not like there's a hidden encumbrance penalty for using certain layers.
The three kinetic layers I put on to those boots added up to 45/45/45 on encumbrance. If you strip them out, you've got unlayered RIS boots with an encumbrance of roughly 35/55/25 (I made the boots before bed last night, memory is kind of fuzzy). That encumbrance is not much better, if at all, than my unlayered composite boots.
I haven't made pants, so I really can't comment on their rough base HAM. What I can say from my own experience and from what I've seen here is that the base HAM on RIS pieces is not below that of their composite counterparts across the board. From what I'm seeing here, the helmet and pants have a lower base encumbrance than comp, but the chest and boots are equal to (if not worse) than comp made with the same layers / enhancers. With a giant gaping hole in the armor called "acid", where's the advantage?
I thought everyone already understood that. Sure, you canget comparable, perhaps better results than composite, but the cost in both credits and time don't even make it remotely worthwhile.
I'm still planning on making a suit, and I'm going to make a nice one. But I have no misconceptions that it's mainly just a goal or badge so to speak. Wall dressing or conversation piece.
The people that are most disappointed set their expectations too high...even after seeing the results.
I dont knowwhere the problem is.
With Interwoven R.I.Ssegment and 7% yellow cubeI made 60% Kinetic and 80% base boots with 4/0/1 enc. I am sure 80% Kinetic, 70% base with equal enc is possible with Interwoven R.I.S
