Thread: Customised Furniture

Hi,

I've seen a few posts about customising the appearance of furniture, and that one of the problems Architects have is that it's difficult to get repeat business because nothing decays.

The first idea I had (which has probably been suggested oodles of times already) is that in addition to selecting furniture colour when it's initially crafted, introduce kits that allow people to alter the colour of existing furniture. The kits could possibly have a limited range of available colours, so that there is still a demand for new, funky colours if people feel the need to redecorate.

The second idea was to have the materials furniture is crafted from affect the appearance of the furniture. For the sake of an example, different woods could produce wooden furniture of different shades (think pine, oak, mahogany, etc). Or using steel, aluminium or copper produces a different highlight on the trim of finished items.

Thoughts?

Color kits have been proposed and we discussed kits verus crafting in various incarnations in the poll thread.

But your idea there about having the resources tie to the color is interesting and I like it. It would make it more of a task than just clicking a color choice, you'd have to have specific resources to get the colors. I'm in favor of making our crafting more complex in general.

Good idea. I just hope the kits don't all require asteroid resources.

Here's something I never thought of before, for user-customized furniture; maybe someone else has: Make furniture recolorization dependent on the material quality and experimentation on the furniture. The furniture gets a durability attribute and a condition variable, and each customization wears it out a little.

This issue is separate from whether customization should use consumable kits or not.

Also, this belongs in the furniture customization thread, but it would be unlikely to be seen there, so I'm cheating on purpose.
