Thread: Make walls not require subcomponents

Last night, after hand building 30 walls (because I didn't want to wait FIVE HOURS for a factory to build 300 structure modules) I suddenly wondered...why are walls even built this way? Very few things actually require a Structure Module by itself, and the few that do could either just take one wall (small houses) or really should be requiring walls instead (medium mineral harvesters). So, my proposal is this: instead of a wall taking 10 structure modules, 200 ore and 300 metal why not just make the wall take 2200 ore and 800 metal directly? Or, even better, to make calculating factory ingredients easier, 2000 ore and 1000 metal? I think this will solve a few problems:

1. No more worrying about getting structure module crates to work in a factory input hopper
2. Less database load since we can build, say, one crate of 10 walls directly instead of having to build 10 crates of structure modules first. Not to mention keeping novice architects from grinding out dozens of uncrated structure modules.
3. It will ease the effect of the critical failure bug on architects who don't build walls in factories all the time (which I do a lot since factories are so slow)

I can't think of anything unbalancing about this change, since I am proposing keeping the resource requirements for building a wall still be 3000. And I think it is generally agreed that the few medium harvesters that don't take 3 walls are actually a bug, but if it is felt that we need to keep those the way they are then we can just change Structure Module to Small Wall and use it for those schematics.

Comments?

This is a great idea. But, if this happens, make the walls 6k xp just like they were before.

We're dealing with SOE here, what do you expect?

/sign tho, good idea, thought about that awhile myself while grinding to master

Well what I actually EXPECT is something more like "We felt that walls were too unbalancing, so we have changed the template to double the resource requirements." Nerf walls now! ;-)

If your going to do that, why bother with walls at all. Why not just have the schematic ask for 25k ore 5k metal?

oh yeah, that would be too easy.

Because this is an acceptable intermediate step, since they seem unwilling to make factories run at a reasonable speed and my customers don't want to wait five hours so I'm having do them by hand until my wrists hurt.

It would be nice to actually have fun in game for once.

Agreed

As if finding enough ore to make walls in quantity isn't time consuming enough.

Even with a macro selecting the structure that you want, this still is a tedious exercise.

*Glances at the 1000 structure modules he just built*

I don't have a problem with the recipe. Do what I do. Set your factory to work making batches of 100 (or more/less) THEN make the walls. Far easier, especially now you can use resources from crates.

I constantly keep at least 100 stuctural modules around for those "urgent" orders (all of them), and i seem to get by just fine.

heh, i have in the past kept a stock of around 4-500 structure mods around in reserve... until yesterday... had 3 huge orders for harvesters and burned through all my backstock. Had to build 36 walls from scratch mostly by hand....

By the time I was done, I had no wrist left.

no problem here with structure modules,

all fine as it is beside u cant use them in factory to produce walls
