I noticed that the left two trees give bonuses to assembly and experimentation. Do those bonuses apply to the sills on the right side of the tree also?
The reason I ask is I am considering just getting the skills to build houses and harvesters. I'm not really interested in the other skills at this point, but if I need those bonuses I'd like to know.

The structure assembly that you get from furniture is supposed to help avoid critical failures. However, at the moment CFs don't apply to the right 2 columns, so that may not matter.
However, the structure experimentation you get from the Construction column is *critical* for making harvesters. Without it you WILL make absolutely crappy harvesters. For houses it doesn't matter.
So, it is viable to do:
4/0/0/0 (only make furniture)
0/4/4/1 (make high-end harvesters and city things) (you need buildings I for one component)
0/0/0/4 (only make houses)
There are other combos I'm sure, but I was just pointing out that 0/0/4/4 is NOT a good choice.

Thanks for the input. While I've been bilding my combat skills up, I've been running a small resource business on the side. I'd like to expand on that eventually and wanted to make sure I took the right skills.
